fuzz pot on Vox Tonebender project -- loses too much too quickly when turned dow

My Vox Tonebender clone sounds great when the fuzz pot is fully maxed...but even a very slight counter-clockwise turn on the pot removes a huge amount of fuzz, with virtually nothing already when I have it at the 3:00 setting.  Why is there so much fuzz loss?  On my Fuzz Face clone, it still sounds nice and fuzzy even at about 2:00 on the fuzz pot.  What can I do to counter this?

Just a regular 1K linear pot.  I have the 820R resistor soldered to lug 1 of the pot just like the schematic says but this doesn't seem to do the trick.

I thought about that PRR, and I've just ordered some of those and will give it a try.  But I am still surprised st home much fuzz is lost so quickly on the regular 1kb pot.  Why is it so much more dramatic than what one finds on a fuzz face?  Is it somehow because of the 10k on the collector of Q1?  I am also not sure what that 820r resistor is doing on lug 1 of the pot...if it sets the lowest possible fuzz level, shouldn't that level be considerably higher than what I'm getting since 820r is so close to a full 1k?
