I plan to build this soon but I want to understand what's going on
First the schemo

http://revolutiondeux.blogspot.co.uk/2012/01/mad-professor-stone-grey-distortion.html

Question?
What's going on with the lead coming from the node at distortion pot 1 lug and pin2 (tl051) that goes to the output volume pot?
What's that all about?
Thanks
Rich

I'm a refugee of the great dropbox purge of '17.
Project details (schematics, layouts, etc) are slowly being added here: http://samdump.wordpress.com

Kipper4

Thanks Sam. Time for me to educate myself a little further.
I've seen this in a few of my latest builds and ambitions. Especially the milder distortion pedals.
Thanks again

You finished your stone grey yet kipper? Just finished one from the madbean layout
Love it

it's the strangest thing you pretty much do whatever you want with your fingers, even the most dissonant of chords sounds musical.

Naaa not yet Nick.
I got the componants on order. It might be a couple of weeks before they get here.
Plus i need to do a perfboard layout and a little planning too.
I'd love to hear a sample if you would be willing. Even dissonant chords would be good :)
I'm still playing with the Zen drive yet. I love it.

Yup, it;s a killer pedal. Great for everything. Perhaps a better eq would give more options.

Sure I see what I can do. I can't do a REAL recording since my recording gear stays at my cousins house, but I can plug into my iPhones JamUp app and set it to a blackface clean to give you an idea. I think it should let me upload to SoundCloud Directly.

Maybe i can help you with that. I'll do a short recording. Couple of minutes ... few riffs and some chords, just to let you know how this beast works.

Kipper4

Thanks guys cant wait.

Did you both do perf layouts or pcb?

I bought board mountedpots assuming the spacing was like most mad bean stuff, the pots works but the pins are somewhat squeezed together. I get oscillation at the high extremes of the tone and gain.

I assume you dont have this issue jebem?

I might try removing the tone pot and bringing it offboard to see if that helps.
"I want to build a delay, but I don't have the time."

JebemMajke

Well it depends on your guitar. I had issues with my passive yamaha 120s, but my epi SG with emg hz + active electronics inside has no oscillations what so ever.
Ps after I've double checked my guitar wiring and did a better grounding in the instrument all the oscillations were gone.

JebemMajke

I hope it gives you some idea of how it should sound.

Oh yeah the amp is vox ad vt 212 50w. Simlation of a black face with 2x12 cabinet is selected on the amp.

Thanks dude.
I never realised how wierd that stuff sounds without distortion haha.
I now know what to expect, great stuff for the mesa type tones. cool
thanks for doing that.

You re welcome.

Ps, tone pot is more of a presence than tone. You ain;t going to get any low sounds. Only less presence :). That's probably the only flaw. It's great with thick strings and big pick. Heavy playing helps too. But with 9's it gets too trebley. It sounds like mesa because the sound of my guitar is really fat. With more gain it loses it's clarity, but it never goes into a fuzz territory. It's a distortion all the way.

Here is another soundcloud upload, http://snd.sc/1bwSjWw

Recorded straight into jamup app on my phone with a "blackface" model

There isn't really any contiguous playing here just trying to think of random chords most of the time to show off the string separation during dissonant chords.

Beginning is ton at 0% gain at 100% I play with the tone towards the middle, then the gain and the tone a little at the end, with a small section of the volume knob.

I love it. I can see what you mean about the low end.
It seems like it might need a noise gate too.
It is very musical indeed. sound great
thanks Nick

Maybe my phone interface is passive ergo noisy as is
"I want to build a delay, but I don't have the time."

Kipper4

Its underway.
The board is almost all soldered up.
Substitutions
16 pin dip socket as i'm awaiting the 14 pin sockets in the slow boat from china.
I cant wait until the chips get here. Only just over a week until i can test it fellas.
Mean time i'll do a sans chip debug and probe the distortion stage.
As i have a tl051 already. and i'll throw in any old transistor just to check it until they arrive too.
Ohh and the offboard wiring to do too.
I'm getting excited :)

GGGGRRRRR
It's ticking like a biatch. Practically no volume, distortion pot does jack.
I've tried debugging but ziltch so far.
I'm gonna leave it for today. Frustrated now.
