No true bypass, Soft touch Boss style

Since I dont see them too often, except perhaps TTG plate switches, what are the DIY options for Boss style, soft-touch, non (or less) mechanical switching - instead if using stomp switches?  Leaving a buffer running is fine.  I've lost two 3PDT switches in the last 3 weeks... when you have to stomp, plus a light tap to get the switch to throw.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Yes.  Here's an actual Boss switch:

If you want to use the exact switch that Boss uses, you'd have to design a way to actuate it without breaking it.  Instead, you could get a SPST momentary stomp switch. Just make sure you get a good one. I've got some inexpensive ones and used on as a replacement garage door opener switch. Sometimes it works by barely pushing it, and other times I have to mash it a few times to get it to make contact.

ive been thinking about using those tiny momentary switches lately...as i really only play/rec at home nowadays it would be nice to have a ''non clunky'' board...

my old korg ax1500g multi fx uses them, and are really reliable..it just uses a sprung piece of plastic with a 2mm pole of plastic that hovers just 1mm above the switch..lightly tap and its on...silently. 8)

Smallbear, is that momentary switch significantly more reliable than the standard Asian 3pdt?

The momentary switch is very reliable...I think it was developed for automotive apps.  It has become a standard replacement part for Line 6 and Digitech mods, and many people also use it for BOSS/Ibanez re-houses. But please realize that the momentary switch and the 3PDT are very different animals electrically: The former is a simple contact closure that triggers logic; the 3PDT actually switches audio.

The boss momentary switches are the same type as was used in the keyboards of a couple of brands of old-school computer terminals (before membrane 'boards became popular), which were used day in, day out, by professional and non-professional typists alike... We used to keep a boxful of them at work, and we had maintenance contracts on over a thousand of the terminals that used them (that is about 90,000 individual switches),  but the consumption rate was still fairly low.
