Wondering what the closest diy pedal/preamp to a mark 2c lead
is out there that will take humbuckers from clean to mean (med gain)?
I've seen the boogyman and it seems to be a tube to fet translation.
I'm concerned the source caps will eliminate the harmonics and wondering
if adding more stages or using mu amps would be a better way to go.

Mesa kills a lot of the harmonics in their amps anyway.
The source caps are pretty mild compared to Mesa's multi band aid approach.

Seljer:  If I could afford to build a tube preamp I would have two of those Mark2c with a plexi switch
and two gains as well as an engl 530 in the same casing with two effects sends for a 5 channel preamp.
Unfortunately I can barely afford to put tires on the car. I also don't have a workspace anymore.

Thanks for the info JL, that might explain why I only like the 2c and the walkabout 300.

Perhaps what I should be asking is what should I use for gain stages so i can build the boogyman
with more headroom. With humbuckers I'd like to go from light sparkle to full 2c.
The engl mod3 handles my higain issues and the Carvin SX fet preamp stage handles my clean.
I am running 12v however I'm planning on going to 15 so i can go bipolar for other circuits.
I'm currently reworking my 5 channel floor preamp pulling marshall sims out.
I also run a GNX mainly with fender twin, mesa 2c, and engl savage sims all through the same cabsim
or direct to a guitar cab. I like how the 2c and engl sims compliment each other.

Builds: Engl mod 3, bor (2x), 5 stage bor, riot, formula 5, cornish buffers, cot50, carvin preamps,
multiple fet and opamp buffers, multiple eqs, sho, peppermill, uno, Bor based mk2c, prof tweed,
OLC soldano (2x) and too many more.

Tube preamps are not as expensive as you may think!
I built a Soldano X88r from parts sourced on ebay and such like for under £100...

2U Rack £15 - ebay
transformer £15-20 - ebay (old valve radio ones work well!)
Tube sockets and hareware £15 (ampmaker)
10 * 6n2p-ev tubes from russia with love:) £10 (ebay)
Caps and resistors from futurlec £20ish

fairly complicated build but worked out really well! sounds wicked! ;D

Check out ebay and you can build a mark IIc+ for very little cash!

Could you elaborate more on this, please? It's pretty interesting.

That analysis of the Mark IIC was pretty insightful. A smaller bypass cap on the lead stages and mixing in clean signal for a tight sound that isn't lacking bass is a really cool approach.

I've decided to sort of start from scratch toward something like a jfet sans amp tri ac.
So Far the "Fury2D+" has a functional bell like clean running at 15v. This is so one can use
it with a bipolar supply to utilize some existing eq and buffer circuits or graft parts of it
(modules) into an existing crappy amp. It's going to be a preamp like the 5 channel Frankenbox
(never posted) was. I didn't like the joyo or the tech 21 cali.

If you like the Dr. Boogey why not power it at 18v for more headroom?

I wound up using a mk2 eq in a pedal shared with the abazachi.
Then I picked up a crate gxt100. The randall went to the sell pile instantly.
After a couple of mods the crate has the potential to do exactly what i'm trying to do with'a 4 channel pedal.
With the mk2 eq in front its almost got the tones I'm after for a poor man's setup.
For now in the interests of my sanity I'm gonna work with the amp and go back to pedal building in
the spring.
