Schematics and fuzz face issues. Always make sure they make sense.

So I built a Jade Fuzz, and the thing wasn't working at all. I almost came here asking if it was an issue with the gain of the third transistor being too low (only 60 hFE for a 2n3904, VERY low) as I tried voltage testing to discover that the "MUD" pot was only putting out a few mV, and here's why.

100k Pot. Looking back, of course that makes no sense. Turning the pot to within abour 10-20% of max turned it on. Here's why.

Two different drawings, two different conclusions. One will definitely work, the other definitely won't, except for that last section of the pot. Lesson learned: always make sure the schematic looks right, and voltage checking can be a clue someone somewhere mis-copied or intentionally created a red herring value. People sometimes change values like this in order to protect their work from being ripped off, as per www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/dirtytrk.htm‎; and a mis-copy is easy to do if you are in a hurry. I was lucky to find the competing schematic when I was looking for the original to post here, even though the answer was in my face with my DMM.

If I can solve the problem for someone else, I've learned valuable skill and information that pays me back for helping someone else.
