Jimmy,

My experience with the BSIAB2 is that is is extremely noisy.  More so than any other pedal I've used.  So it's probably working as normal.    If you have ever put two guitar amps in series (as Randy Bachman used to do) you know how much background noise you get with two amps in series (it ain't hum!).  It's sort of the same situation with this circuit.  Great sound when you're playing...need a quick foot or a noise suppressor when you stop.  That's my experience and opinion of it.

I also have a BSIAB 2 and although it sounds great, it *is* noisy with humbuckers or single coils.  In my humble opinion, it's too noisy not to have a noise suppressor of some sort if you run the gain high.  I use a ISP Decimator and it does the job well; it does kinda suck a little of the sustain as I have to have it pretty high to cut off the hiss.  It's definitely not hum tho.

Been following this thread with interest as this pedal is on my want-to-build short list.  If this is a noisy circuit, any idea how CMATMods is able to make their Brownie quiet?  Quote from their web page - "Pedal is dead quiet with hardly any noise."  Or is that just marketing?  Is the other famous commercial version also quiet or noisy?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I do use single coils, the hum varies with orientation.
Its seems from what you are saying, is that my pedal performance is as expected, which is something I am trying to ascertain. Maybe the gain/bias of the first stage be adjustable?

If the hum varies as you move your guitar around, then the noise is coming from the guitar and not the pedal. The ambient hum is being received by the pickups and the high gain of the BSIAB iis making the hum more noticeable than with other pedals.

R3 and R10 are the main gain setting resistors. Increase the value of both to 1k and see if that makes the pedal more useful.

Best regards, Jack
