Sent.  If you use the spreadsheet I sent you-- just get the resistors "close."  Input the actual values into the formula.  The spreadsheet does all the math.

I cant remember but i think i either tested the resistor with the DMM or put in a trimmer (5k) and wired it as a variable resister then set with the DMM.
Ma throats as dry as an overcooked kipper.

Ok got it to work. Tough circuit :p I got 75 and 83 hFE what does that tell you? Am I looking for more or less

Will--

It just depends.  You need to see what you are building, and research what you need.  Some circuits want high Hfe, while others want low Hfe.  Some want no leakage, where others need some.  Regardless-- any Germanium with leakage above 300 should just probably get tossed in the trash as it is probably near failure.

As an example-- if you are building a Fuzz Face (as I usually am).  The magic Q1 value is around 70 to 85 Hfe.  And, for Q2 you need more gain-- like 110 to even 140 Hfe.

Anyway, from my experience -- 85 Hfe is a good #.  Very much in the middle.  I've seen ranges from low 30's to about 250's.  Most in the 50's to 60's (for the part#'s I select).  It depends on the particular part # too.  Anyway-- consult a transistor spec. sheet for the ranges.  Then, test them because Germanium (actual vs. specification) are all over the place.

Might not have been clear but 2n6520 is silicon isn't it?

Do you java examples of odd exotic pedals that could use this as the fuzz face is a bit done over and over again. I got a pretty good sounding fuzz on its way. So I'm more looking for old vintage "hybrids" in which a 2n6520 could substitute

I'm sorry, I don't know.  I live in my own little niche.  I almost exclusively play with fuzzes with Germaniums.  I hunt down Germaniums, test um, and use um...

Maybe someone else here with more knowledge can chime in...

I guess eBay unless someone else here may have specific vendors over there.  I personally have gotten a big bunch of Russian surplus Germaniums from Russia, and also some very nice GE 128's from E. Europe...

yes...and 85 seems good, right in the Hfe 20/100 range.

just pick a vintage silicon fuzz and these will most likely work with minimal tweaking...Fuzz Rite definitely or even a SuperFuzz or Big Muff (I've done all 3 with hfe <100).   A more obscure one would be the Sunn Buzz, which is a favorite...a Jen Fuzz, Knight Fuzz, 1 of the 2 transistors in a Heathkit Fuzz or Jordan Bosstone, Astrotone, etc..

really, there's just too many vintage si fuzzes that can be built with those

Check out alexer1 (Ukraine) and minifux1 (Germany) on the Bay.  I've used both.  Prices can be fairly reasonable.

I got some nice AC128's from eBay "elebcz" (Czech Rep.)-- but haven't had a chance to try them yet.  But, the #'s were right.
