Parisians have a bit more class and more understanding.

My partner's maternal family are from a small village in Haute Savoie and if you'd seen what *some* of the Parisians have done to their holiday homes there you might revise your opinion  :o

Suffice it to say that they've not always enamoured themselves to the locals

I've been to Paris, Texas...   ;D

I've been through Paris Maine!! (But I blinked and missed it.)

"Paris is a town in and the county seat of Oxford County, Maine, United States. The population was 5,183 at the 2010 census."

I shouldn't make fun. Paris ME is much bigger than my town.

This is the Paris Texas Eiffel Tower. And yes the hat is real and not photoshopped. (BTW, that's not me ;))

Glad to see you Parisians on the forum! Welcome!

Resynthesis--

When you speak as I did (In generalities) about a group of people (Parisians), either positively or negatively-- the definition is "prejudiced."  I knew it was dangerous to do that, and certainly I don't want to come off as biased or ignorant.  I'm neither.  In my time in this world, I have developed my own belief that 5% of the people in the world are absolutely outstanding people, and 5% are total A-Holes that ruin it for the rest of us.  Hence, why we have laws taking away our freedoms telling us all the things we aren't allowed to do in order to protect us from ourselves!

There is good and bad everywhere... look around your own workplace, jobsite, or whatever.

For the record, I am appalled many times about how Americans present themselves when traveling abroad. (More that 5%)... there I go again generalizing!

I was just stating I have had much better than average traveling experience in Paris, and the typical STEREOTYPE of how the French treat foreigners (Americans) did not seem to apply there.

I used to really be with it!  That is, until they changed what "it" is.  Now, I can't find it.  And, I'm scared!  --  Homer Simpson's dad

Did you know that the population of the USA is around 5% of the world population (3M to 6B ). I mean just saying ;)

They hate themselves.  (it's a joke)

Actually, just to chime in on this wonderful discussion, in my experience I found that Parisians are more arrogant and selfish than people from the rest of France (that I've been to... I've never been, for example, to Strasburg).
I'm not generalizing, it's simply fact from my personal experience, just as it was with Mark (italianguy63).
I also know some Parisians who are sweethearts !

As for travelling Americans, same thing ! I met some very open, polite and funny guys from Seattle, but then I also crossed paths with two couples who were so full of themselves, saying stuff like "in the US it's much better", "why don't you cut those old buildings down and build new ones?", and ... "what do you mean, you don't have ketchup for my bavette??" (I'm not kidding with that last one).

Hemmel--

Another one of my "beliefs."

I think the way one presents themselves when traveling goe a long way to the way you are treated by the locals.  You exactly hit it on the head about not being rude or insensitive to local customs.  I always remind myself that I am a "guest" in a foreign country, and make sure I am polite, and respective.  Hence, I have NEVER had a problem with anyone traveling.

Take that back-- had a rude Brit money changer in Prague once...

PS when I see a fat American woman in somewhere formal like Paris wearing "Juicy" sweatpants.... I just want to climb in a hole and die.

despite the fact that this turned out to be a pretty funny topic, i'm gonna go back to the main theme a little, if you guys please  ;)

just got back from my first day at the fab lab from la cité des sciences at la villette, and they have some pretty interesting stuff going on there!
it is free (except for the use of the laser cutter/engraver and the vinyl printer/cutter), and anyone can go there and use machines for personal projects after attending the 1-hour "presentation" course describing the machines and all.

if anyone is interested in meeting somewhere, this could be the place to start at.

about american travellers, i work in a small 100% french craft beer bar in the north of paris, people coming here (beer enthousiasts) know where they are going because we're everything but touristy and every one of them was the nicest customer ever. and i would love to say i never met any french jerk while travelling... but this is not possible unfortunately.

People are people, I can't say that I've noticed that much difference wherever I've been. I'm British but spend quite a bit of time in France, have worked in Italy and Spain, have Irish relatives, etc, etc...

Most people are perfectly fine, a few are stars and a few are scum. Cliche next, c'est la vie
[/ot]

A few years ago I found a shop at the marché aux puces de Saint Ouen (a shop not a market stall) which was crammed full of all sorts of weird and wonderful electronic junk. I don't know if it's still there and I haven't had a chance to get there on my last couple of trips to Paris. Does anybody know anything about this so I don't waste a trip sometime in the future?

Will.mendil

Lol love the juicy joke.
Anyway. I am passing my exams during the next two weeks so won't do much. But regarding la cite des sciences. Is the exhibition permanent? When does it end?
And where is your bar I live in the north of Paris. ?
Lastly what is the store. If I have the time I might have a look. Especially if they sell useful stuff for stompboxes

I googled it.  Hurling Pub, 8 rue Descartes, 75005.  It is in St. Germain... By the University of Paris, South of Notre Dame.
