Hi,

I dont want to steal this guy's great work. However as I prefer making my own pedals than buying them, does someone have a similar schematic to the Bmc dirtboost?

On other notes I just finished building y first tube valvecaster. Sure it is not new but it is for me ^^ however I am sill missing a tube so will have to wait before testing it :s. I put a red led in the socket. Should look cool.

Cheers

Finished the primary paint job on the "tubeless" valve caster. I managed to get the cracking on the front. Don't really know how but I think it was by spraying the varnish before the acrylic was completely dry. The screws for the tube docket are not great but that's all I had in stock.
I know I am talking alone here but here we go

There are some tube shields designed for protection of the tube rather than shielding, but they may attach where you have tube socket hardware now, so you may be able to eliminate the giant tabbed washers you have there.  I would be a bit apprehensive about having a tube stick up from a device that is intended to be stomped on, plus, some people at a concert may just grab the tube and run!

For good looks but no shielding:

The more common tube shields are here:

Some people also use U-shape handles for tube protection, one on each side of the tube:

You are on your way to a good design, but even if you keep it at home and never gig with it, the tube will need protection.

Thanks. As this is my first tube anything I don't really know what to expect regarding the rigidity of the tube and socket but I first intended to have the inside but I felt I d rather have it outside after all. Not really because of the design ( mind you, I stuck the led within the socket I'm sure tha is going to look cool) but because what to e able and quickly change tube for testing. I'll get some sort of shield any time soon though.

Does it happen often people grabbing tubes out of gear? Don't they realise that it could be dangerous. I mean put a charge pump in there and you can have more than 200V running in there. Not sure how lethal it actually is since it would be coming from a 12V block. Anyway I don't really think they would consider this fact

The only danger you have with grabbing a tube is that it will be hot.  The only way you could get a shock is if you touch the right pins when you are pulling the tube out and that is almost impossible anyway, since you only pull the glass envelope.  The tube can wobble around in the socket quite a bit if there is nothing to keep it upright and you can bend the pins and possibly crack the envelope at the pin seals.  A shield or protector of some sort will correct that.  And of course, you still have the problem that you may accidentally stomp the tube instead of the switch.

With some 12AX7's going for over $20, if you share a stage with another band, one of them may take an interest in a tube that could be used in his own amp.  As for grabbing tubes out of gear, are you of the opinion that nothing nefarious ever happens in a club?

I did my share if gigging and I was lucky enough to only "loose" one crap boost pedal I made a long time ago i.e rubbish.

I'll keep it as such for now and test when I get my tube. And will be purchasing a shield when I do my next big order.
