Hi, I bought a 6n1P valve that is meant to be used with 6V in parallel , however, out of curiosity I've put 12V on the filament in series as you would on a 12AU7. First by accident and then to test. It seems to be working fine. The filament are red hot but the sound is nice. My question is how bad is it to run this tube in series as it is meant to be used with 6V. Should I stop immediately or can I try to use it till i get my 7806 . cheers

? ? ? There's only one filament. What do you mean by series or parallel??

12V on a 6V filament is about like 240V on a 120V lamp. It runs VERY bright and dies VERY quick. For a ~~20,000 hour heater, like 1 to 3 hours.

Put a resistor in _series_ with the heater. (This is actually better than a regulator, but nobody listens...) 10 Ohms 10 Watts... you can still get this at Radio Shack.

Dont know if I have the space for such a resistor. (These are the big white ones right).

I don't really know about how the thin is built but the description said that you cannot run it in 12v. Only on 6. I'll post the diagram. And if someone speaks Russian I can post the "manual"

I speak Russian, because I am Russian, but there is no need to post datasheet here, for recently I have already written somewhere around here (Superfly thread) how to decipher russian tubes designations. You have 6N1P and first digit means that heater voltage is 6 V (+/- 0,3 V), so your 12 V will definitely kill your tube's heater.

PRR is right as always!
your tube will not last for long if you have 12v on the heaters!!! you can generally run the heaters +- 10% but any more and you will seriously damage the tube..

Each tube has 2 heaters in it one for each triode the 12au7/12ax7 has the option to run the heaters in series for 12.6v operation but the 6n1p or 6n2p's do not and only operate in parallel mode hence 6.3v.

Do what PRR suggested as its the least space consuming and economical way :icon_biggrin:

Could you draw me a small diagram please. I might be able to fit it afte all

I got the 10 hom 10W resistor to fit, how do you want to wire it?
12V -> 10Ohm10W -> Pin 9 --tube--> Pin 4&5 -> ground
or
12V -> 10Ohm10W -> Pin 4 --tube--> pin 5 -> ground

Pin 9 on this tube is a screen and should be connected to earth.  It is NOT connected to the heater!!!
The heater supply should be connected as your second arrangement.

I dont understand, maybe my skills in electronics reached their limits. How is the 10ohm resistor fixing the fact that I need 6v on the heaters from a 12v supply. I measured the tension between (10ohm -> pin 4) & ground and I get 12v.

??? If I wire 9 to ground, That means i cannot put a 12AU7, right ??? what is the screen for?

> I measured the tension between (10ohm -> pin 4) & ground and I get 12v.

UN-loaded.

Put the load (heater) on it.

The heater is 6.3V 0.6A. Roughly a 6.3V/0.6A= 10 Ohm resistor.

Two 10 Ohm resistors in series across 12V, each one will get about half, or 6V each.

Yes, you will have to re-wire to use the 12A_7 series tubes.
