For the "treble cut" problem, you can "darlington" the mosfet, either with a simple bjt or a small-signal mosfet with lesser gate cap. However, it isn't always "proper" to connect the drains of the small-sig and "the beefy one" together. Imho better is to connect the drain/collector of the small-sig directly to the V+, but thru a current-limiting resistor. Which means that the V+ should be fairly clean to begin with...

Of course, all of this experimentation should be done within the context of the desired tonal character...

You are right, but the distortion you get out of it is completely different of that of a single device stage ac coupled (with a capacitor) to a buffer.

within the tonal context of a booster it probably shouldn't be that bad, but for an guitar od you are right...
