I replaced Q2 "D" with another "GR" I ordered extra by accident and tried swapping out Q3 "R" with with the old Q2 "D" same issue.... HOWEVER I replaced Q3 with an NTE457 I had laying around that has an idss of about between a "Y" and "GR" and the pedal works now!! So I'm going with the "R" and "D" versions of s2k30 had a lower max idss and were being overloaded/shut off?

That's great news! Thanks for reporting on that.

Hopefully, no one else falls into the same trap of mixing fet's.

I am hoping though, that someone tries a complete set of different fet's, just to see if they get good results. Although I have 2SK30's on hand for this build, I also have some 2N5484's too that I want to try.

This is interesting...

Grabbed my new (this is cheap and good) tester.  Threw in some Jfets to test and got these results for Iss.

J201 (Tayda) -- average .25
2N5457 (Small Bear) -- .75
2N5457 (NOS) -- .75
2SK30A (Tayda) -- .75

Based on imJonWain's post of his NTE457 (2N5457) working.. it assumes the cheap water festival Jfets I got are "Y"'s.

Based on the data sheet, the Iss for A 2SK30A-R  *substitute J201 here, also*  is (.75 published) about 1/2 to 1/4  that of the 2SK30A-Y (1.5-3.0 published).  Looking at "ratios" it looks to be true based on the above data although the actual Iss from the tester is much lower; who knows how the test is measured?  

This may be useful, maybe not.  But, I am pretty comfortable with it...

LOL-- The Water Festival people are Tayda.

The joke is every time someone tries to make a big order-- there is some delay because a religious water festival is going on in Thailand.  Sorry.
