Hey Guys, just got a quick question:

I want to build the Devi Ever Hyperion in the next days, and the only thing that I didn´t have layin around was a 2n2907A Silicon PNP Transistor.
So I went to the local electronics shop, and as the guy there didn´t have the 2n2907a , he searched for a equvalent, which would be the 2n3244. At least thats what hes saying.

So, can i just use the 2n3244 instead of the 2n2907a, or will it sound very different or dont work etc. ?

Thank you for your help!

Try it. It's likely to work better than no transistor at all.   :icon_biggrin:

Most well-designed circuits are set up so they are tolerant of variations in the transistors. In fact, the need for tweaks and special parts is one of the hallmarks of a "designer" that is new to the biz.

However, I cannot comment on whether a Devi Ever anything is well designed. I've never looked at any of them in any detail.

Again: it'll work a whole lot better than no transistor.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

The Hyperion has the PNP connected "backward".

It is not clear to me how it works. If it is just a forward diode, or it breaks-down, or if it may depend on some characteristic of the *specific* batch of 2907s that Devi had.

Try it.

paul, you can reverse bias ANY transistor or fet and it will still work. in the case of this pedal, devi uses it backwards to take advantage of the misbiased transistor sound to create some of the sound.

some transistors will work better than others... some may not work at all. but sometimes, they work GREAT... particularly in fuzzes, where a reverse beta'd transistor can really bring it to life in some cases, especially with a germanium fuzz.

i routinely socket and swap 'em around when working up a new fuzz, or populating any design. whichever way it sounds best is what i use, and i could give a damn about pinout. if it works, and sounds good, that's good enough for me.

and sometimes ya want farty buzzy noise. sometimes, it brings it to life in a too mild-mannered fuzz.

ymmv, of course... i tend to not worry too much about letting the magic smoke out... pretty hard to kill most transistors in my experience.

peace!

With a couple of 4148s diodes you can have almost the same effect.
Put a diode from collector to base, and another from base to gnd, both negative sides to base ;)
Try a new non-leaky 1n60 or Schottky from C to B too.
And increase collector resistor for more fx.

If there's anyone on the planet, that can plug something in backwards, and not only make it work, but also make beautiful music with it, it's Jimi. Woah, woah, woah, it's magic, ya know... :icon_lol:
