The transistor still works and the hFE is in spec.

When I was a kid I took apart the caps of at least a dozen 2N3055's, for the desperation of my father (the owner ).

These things are very good (and expensive) phototransistors.

By the way, I've seen lots of projects (envelope followers & the like) with LDRs, but not with phototransistors. Why?

How much does the hfe changes with light?

Update: I measured the wires connecting the chip to the pins and they are 0.010" which makes them 30 gauge.

Does this make you reconsider the impact of interconnect cables?

Make sure you match them all....

Wire bonding by hand is one of the things I do for a living, except the wire is .0007" and those pads are giant comparatively speaking.
