So it looks like the big guys are dissecting vocal possessors in order to sell them to us piece by piece.... are there any layouts out there for us to build our own? Not necessarily for the ones in the image but any projects at all....I'm burnt out on guitar pedals and looking for other useful projects...

Yeah I'm totally with you on this one - some vocal processors or even studio outboard gear is probably the next step!  :icon_mrgreen:
I can't think of anything funny just yet.

One word echoes through my mind: VOCODER.

Google for "Elektor Vocoder" and have a lot of fun.

There is a PAiA Vocoder, also.

have you made a DI box? if not, it could be a useful thing and a simple enough project to get used to XLR wiring. try your vocals though guitar pedals first and listen for what you would change. probably not much tweaking needed for most effects.

DIY racks! it's nice to not have to worry about stomping on the damn thing, nor how to cram 6 pots into a 1590A. if you know someone who's worked at a studio that's been around long enough to have gone through the early digital era, i guarantee they have old, unused rack units taking up space more valuable in rent than said assets. probably would give them to you if you seem excited and thankful enough.

mainly I want some kind of compression...we have some tunes with some good old grungy loud quiet loud happening and the vocals are really getting lost and the screams are well...screams....moving closer and further from the mic just isn't cutting it.....and playing and singing at the same time while constantly adjusting distance from the mic is....well something I haven't gotten use to yet I suppose... some compression would help things I'm sure.....but I'm open to all projects/ideas....thanks for the input. You guys are the best!

BE CAREFUL with compressors on vocal micrphones in live situations! You MUST have someone always checking it, and most of the time you'll need a limiter after de compressor, otherwise MICROPHINIC FEEDBACK IS GARANTEED TO HAPPEN!

Not a limiter, you need an expander gate to cut the sound off with no input.

anything thats gonna require more helping hands really isn't gonna happen in our live situations....I'd like to take as much power away from the sound people that we end up dealing with....I swear they are all paid in beer and they are prepaid! I guess we're just gonna end up with songs that the recorded and live versions sound nothing alike. :-S
