I have that great sounding Kawai SX-210 for about 17 years. It always worked fine till lately when it started to play notes randomly and automatically, as well as double notes (when I play a single note another note is played randomly). I check on the the synth-diy mailing list and was advised to check at the NiCd battery area. I found it has leaked and that it left it's green acid on the area where it's at on the PCB. I had to remove a few resistors to be able to clean the area, than placed new ones instead. Also had one connector broken so I resoldered. I also still use the old battery till I get a new one - placed it far from the PCBs. It actually doens't look like it ever leaked. The synth has stopped playing it's own notes as it did before. Actually it works almost perfect now (after I cleaned all push switches which hardly worked...) except that sometimes I notice that a single key or two play a sound that is slightly different from the patch sound. For example, when I use cutoff of about 50%, the D key will play as the cutoff is set to far below 50% while all others will play good. Strange.

Would you suggest to continue replacing components near where the battery was placed ? Could it be dried capacitors and how do I check for ones ? any other ideas ?

Hi,
did you check the keyboard contacts?that`s a known problem in old analog synths, specially teisco and kawai...also old electrolytic capacitors are source of trouble, try to replace the suspecting looking ones

BEST!!!

but how does a dried capacitor *look* ?? is there a way to target a dried cap only by viewing ??

I was advised to use acetone to remove the acid, and that it CANNOT damage any component, but I know acetone is harmful for plastic...

What about this ?
