Holy crap.  Soldering in that ceramic cap freaking FIXED THE PROBLEM.
Scruffie's suggestion worked!
Thanks also to duck_arse for generously sending me some spare caps.

When I first hooked everything up after my amateur but serviceable solder job, no sound output happened - worry and freakout - until I realised I had not put the output lead into the output jack of my volume pedal.

Yay!  It works!

ahh, the output lead. if only they were all that easy. I did some IT helpdesk over the phone with my mate, setting him up with linux. sound didn't work. I told him I wouldn't ask if eveything was plugged in the right places and turned on, cause he woulda lernd from last time he said no sound (not plugged in). so we went through 3 days of phone calls back and forth, me digging for any last straw in logs and terminals, the machine was doing everything but sounding.

he called on the fourth day, a little sheepish. he had finally checked at the back, it hadn't been plugged in at all. fekker.

anyway, good job, well done.

Awesome! Love it when a thread ends that way. :D You had said that it sounded perfect the way it was, other than the noise. With the added cap, was there any obvious difference in tone? Does it still sound the way you want? For posterity's sake when people are searching this thread...

I am regretting having not done an A/B recording to test this properly.  It may have affected the sound but it if so, it is minimal enough for me to not notice - might do an A/B when I have time to resolder.....
