Visual Sound Route 66 v2 - how can I reduce the gain before the compressor?

First post here! I'd be really grateful for your help... I really like the Compressor side of the Route 66 but, even with the COMP knob fully CCW, there is evident squish (and this is with low output Strat pups). I would like to find a really simple mod to reduce the gain before the compressor.

The excellent input buffer that's soldered direct onto the input jack is a big selling point with VS pedals so I want to avoid messing with that. What options are there for reducing the gain between the input buffer and the compressor circuitry? Is there a simple gain stage where changing a resistor or two would do the trick? Can anyone point me in the right direction...? Of course, a schematic would be the icing on the cake! Many thanks.
