I had a brief PM conversation with Mark Hammer last year about his "Distortion Universe" (is it done yet, Mark?), and I've been working on a spin off, but with CD4053 switching and all fuzz. I've culled 12 Fuzz circuits that are pretty famous, but I'm looking for any input on redundancies or major holes missing from the fuzz scene. I've got:

1) Ampeg Scrambler
2) Axis Fuzz
3) Big Muff
4) Colorsound One-Knob Fuzz
5) Companion Fuzz
6) Foxx Tone Machine
7) Fuzz Face
8 ) Jordan Bosstone
9) Fuzzrite
10) Sam Ash Fuzz
11) Superfuzz
12) Tonebender

Any input is helpful, but I'd like to keep knob count down. Biggest is the Foxx Tone Machine with 3 knobs and a switch, so anything equal or less than 4 controls.

Danke!

Harmonic Percolator.

There are two distinct Fuzz Faces - germanium and silicon.

Four(?) versions of the Tonebender. (Not so distinctly different.)

Tonebender I'm going wkth MKII.5, fuzz face is npn silicon. There are tons of varients for tons of fuzzes, you could probably build twelve different big muffs, but I'm going for the big picture instead of subtle varieties.

Adding Harmonic percolator, now what will it replace?

Isn't a one knob Colorsound basically a silicon Fuzz Face?  You could replace that with the HP.

Scrambler, Tone Machine and Superfuzz are all kind of similar raucous octave up fuzzes - perhaps one could be replaced with an octave down fuzz?

Ooo octave down you say, that's a good idea. I can only think of a blue box off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are more. Good call on the one-knob as well.

1) No, not done yet.  On the stack.

2) The Companion (assuming this is an FY-2) and Fuzzrite are not identical, but very close; the one having a midscoop filter, and the other not.  Potential redundancy there, though some might disagree.  The Superfuzz sits halfway between the more chaotic sound of the Scrambler, and the more consistent octave-up of the Foxx Tone Machine.  You may or may not want to hang onto that middle ground, or put something else in there.

3) I second the Percolator.  Great little circuit.

Thanks everybody. I'm going to pass on the Bazz Fuss, I think it is covered by some of the other stuff, but I will add the Uglyface. I'm also getting rid of the Axis fuzz since I think the Fuzz Face has some of that covered as well as getting rid of the Superfuzz.

So the list, as it stands, is as such.

1) Scrambler
2) Companion Fuzz
3) Foxx Tone Machine
4) Jordan Bosstone
5) Fuzzrite
6) Sam Ash Fuzz
7) Big Muff
8 )Fuzz Face (Ge)
9) Tonebender (MKII.5)
10) Harmonic Percolator
11) Blue Box
12) Uglyface

Any more ideas?

I like this one very much , not very extreme, quite oldfashioned style ( think : Love Sculpture - Sabre Dance)

I didn't cross reference your list, but check out this compendium:  http://tonefiend.com/guitar/fuzzdetective/
