No idea about the 5458s, but I'm glad you got the pedal how you like it!

Does that mean all my 2n5458's are bad/fakes? I think I have 10 of them.

There have been a few discussions around here about fake JFETs but I don't know if 2N5458s were ever suspect (usually J201s). Search for a JFET tester circuit and test them. If they are out of spec from the manufacturer's datasheet then they could well be re-marked "fakes." But JFETs vary a lot, so maybe your batch just happens to be such that in a RAT they drop volume a bit.
