before I spend 10 bucks on these things, what size does the forum recommend? 1/2 " , 3/4"  for a TWN 1590b or 1590bb

nope, was going to mount a board to the enclosure like you see on some of the fancier fuzz boxes out there. looks like 1/2 in or possibly 1/4 " would give enough to fasten strip board to top of enclosure and clear the pots.

for example, this dude uses all three types of fasteners I am aware of which includes what looks like industrial pop rivets

I like mounting boards on 9mm pots for tiny box builds, but use standoffs as well. Rather than drill the face, I mount the standoff to the board and glue in the standoff with JB Weld. A drop on the bottom and let it cure, remove the board, and fill in around the standoff using regular masking tape for a dam- obviously the standoff is located near the enclosure side. If you purchase longer standoffs, you can trim them to size.
Some people drink from the fountain of knowledge, others just gargle.

I glue in standoffs as well but have also drilled through and countersunk for the screws to mount flush. Using 4-40 hardware.
