lol, yeah the 6800pF cap (blue grey red?) caught my eye too. I've never seen one that value before :)

it sounds the same from 2.2-10 nF ..my ears cannot hear a tonal difference with the stated range of input caps, and tried them all on breadboard; but now that you mention it Bless America and specially to the fighting guys and gals who keep me free.

yeop ..Blue = 6, Grey = 8 and multiplier is a Red = 2

68 x 10^2  or 6.8 x 10^3  or 68E2 pF /

so who can guess what the last two white and red bands mean ? lol

Looking at all your pictures it seems that your volume pot is wired to GND instead of 9V as it should for a positive gnd effect. (Unless I missed something in the posts above)

I got her fixed, I have the pot working as the voltage divider ..I played over 2 hours again last night with my Red dot and my flat hat  ..my RM is sweet as can be, it is the tone I had been chasing for 25 years.

RM + Tube amp = bliss . I now have this one-ness going on between the amp, effects, my guitar and me which I have never felt in my life ..and its from the rangemasters tone it gives ..I am still amazed and shocked that not only I made the thing, but it produces these sorts of tonal qualities. my beano boost which I paid nearly 150 bucks for doesnt even touch this thing, at all..neither does my lumpys boost. not even close, those two pedals will be going up for sale. I honestly think those pedals are nothing more than marketing name hype now ..if I can build a sweeter sound, its all marketing imho

However, I still want to buy and try a Jext telez rangemaster just to A/B it with mine and see how it sounds. I really like the way their pedals look..never actually seen one or heard one..maybe in a youtube video once..not many Jext telez YT demos out there

I know silver is 10, gold is 5; so white is a tolerance multiplier by 10?  I still have not memorized the voltage color chart lol

I thought or math class would be harder than it is so far ..we have been working in scientific/EE notation for 3 weeks now ..I was expecting filthy calculus and trig by now lol ..doing a lot of testing small circuits with ohms law.

I need to order some terminal strip and design a better layout for the enclosure. I think today I will work on making some jigs for assembly of circuits. My guitar is getting raped and my fingers hurt ..i have been playing a lot since the RM is working, and while my fingers are resting I can build ..I have like 8 hours of homework to, still need mow grass etc ..not enough time in the day . I may die of exhaustion.

gold/silver/red/brown is 10%, 5%, 2% and 1% for resistors. It's diff for capacitors. Most capacitors use letter codes i.e. F=1%, G=2%, J=5%, K=10%, and M=20%

tropical fish capacitors, 4th band, tolerances:
green = 5%
white = 10%
black = 20%

So if you have in your junkbox some old capacitors with color degradation you have to guess if one band is orange or red.. :icon_frown:

BK Precision 810B

we have to do everything by hand lol ..no autoranging DMM lol. they are the old school kind.  Thats right, its a letter system!

hymenoptera

The BK 810B is freaking great for the price! I got mine like-new condition used on the 'bay for I think $25 or so, and it's been invaluable.

The commerical studio up the street has an old Tenma 72-040 in the shop that I enjoy using, also.

Auto-ranging capacitance meters are $expensive$, but I'm happy with what I've got. For larger values I have my Flukes, which are autoranging. The 77 only has 1nF accuracy though, and the 87 goes down to 0.1nF, but for picofarads the BK is my go-to. It goes down to 0.1pF! At that range, just touching the leads can add/take several puffs off the reading! Best meter purchase I've made, easy to use, and it gets used almost daily. Can't recommend it enough.  :)

I have a FLUKE 87 as a calibration certified prototype for my rest instruments but it's the one and ony I use at every turn..

hello, so how much popping is acceptable in a RM pedal ? I have the 1meg pull down resistor after input cap but still get some popping. sometimes its more prevalent than other times. I can live with it but just wondering what you all think ..I read the GEO flex article that it is not inherently pop less: nature of the beast to some extent ?

I am a novice, as you probably know, but I think I have been told to put the pull down before the input cap  :icon_confused:

hey, I've only been at this 6 months , I learn something new each day. Thanks to everyone for helping. As you can see the 1meg pull down resistor in before the input cap along with the 10K voltage divider hooked up properly.

I got the OC140 Red Dot black can wired up and it sounds fantastic. played for over hour until my fingers hurt again.. love these things

tommycataus

I have anti pop resistors on both input and output for mine, best to hook them up to the 3pdt terminals I find. Looking good :)

 thanks!

I added the fuzzy side of some velcro along the vertical well to help prevent shorts with the lose input wire. it sounds like a million dollars, no popping at all..I might go ahead and and the input ground on the bypass but there is no need in this particular circuit. it turned out perfect. My layout needs to be tweeked a bit but this is a very small enclosure ..I should really use a 125B as there isn't much room to twist and turn the components. Got the heat shrink all torn up because I was taking measurements on the transistor.

I hope I never meet somebody who has swallowed a small child.  What kind of sickos do they think use batteries?

I couldn't resist.  I just have a thing for language that blindly assumes a context.  This is one of those things that would be very confusing to somebody who is new to the English language.

More literally I can say with confidence it is impossible for a child to get a 9V battery lodged in the ear or nose.  That goes for most objects that are large enough to contain print in legible text "If swallowed or lodged in ear or nose, promptly see doctor".  Something like a pencil or pen may fit into this category but not a 9V battery.  I am doubtful it could be swallowed by a small child.  I am doubtful I could get a 9V battery down.

That is pretty funny though  ;D

My guess is it's a generic warning on all of that manufacturer's batteries, including AA and AAA batteries, and someone was too lazy (or some corporate lawyer too paranoid) to write a new warning when they introduced their 9v product.

I need to take some measurements and order some binding screws to mount the terminal strip to the enclosure  :)
