Fake stereo effect?

Grabbed an hour to do some testing, discovered that what I'm hearing is down to the phase. If I place a pedal beyond the ABY, it switches the phase when active. This happens with my little angel and pt-80.  My amps were clearly out of phase originally but in phase when one effect is switched on, hence the improvement I'd heard. I proved this by putting a reversing switch on the speaker leads on one amp so I could easily A/B the sound. With a single amp this is irrelevant but with two?

I've only tested my chorus and delay. Each seem to invert so with one pedal on, inversion, 2 pedals on, normal etc. On the face of it, this gives me a switching issue if I'm using effects after the ABY. I could use something like RG's polarity reverser but I'd have an extra switch to press if I put that in a separate box. if a pedal is not true bypass, will it invert even when switched off?.... More thinking time needed which will also include 'do I really need 2 pedal chains?'
