jack's nipples

I have some standard plastic 6.35mm jacks, you know the ones, they are this:

I measure from the outer metal ring to the tip-end of the chassis as 30mm, with a lump of nipple sticking out another 4mm. when I measure the shaft, of a standard 6.35mm jack plug, I find it is 30mm from flange to tip. I have a particulary hairy narrow build in progress, and I'm wondering:

is there a good reason for the nipple being there - and is there any reason why I shouldn't assert my rights to that extra 4mm, and cut jack's nipples off?

extra info - there is a little square observation hole cut in the jack chassis under where the tip sits, so the socket is not sealed in any useful way.

thank you for your time and attention.

I've done it, and it worked out.  A teensy bit of the plug tip sticks out, but much less than the removed plastic did.  Try doing it to one jack and see how that works out for you.

Offsetting the installation of the two jacks can help a bit, such that any protruding bits are not nose to nose (or nipple to nipple),

duck_arse

ahh, both mine are pointing in the same direction, as nipples tend to do (I'm told). it's all that volume between the jack chassis and the opposite wall I want back.

I won't mind showing just the tip.

I've done this too. No issues.

I've been known to cut Jack's nipples off too. As Mark said, you will get a wee bit of turtle heading (sorry) from the jack, so if there is a chance you will ground it on your board, you might want to think again.

Someone was cutting the nipple off those, mounting a vertical trim pot behind and i think used to adjust the bias. Screwdriver in through the jack to adjust the trimmer.

I'll admit I was a little nervous clicking on this thread during class. Was not disappointed.

It's got a quarter-inch open hole on the dirty side of the box!! How could it be "sealed"?

(Yes, there have been flip-up covers to keep the spiders out, and even rubber plugs on tethers, but all that stuff gets ignored or broken.)

Also that type has gaps around the metal fingers.

There are others which are nominally closed 99.44% all around the clean side, but not "sealed", and you still have a gaping big hole to the whole world (and whatever your plugs drag in).

Sealing was never the plan on telephone jacks. They needed constant access, they had cleanings as needed. The cheapened version we use for guitar is no different (if you clean it yerself).
--------------------

If you trim the bushing, you will push the plug's retaining groove past the jack's retaining finger. If it stays there, contact is not so good. If it slips-back, what have you gained?

--Or do you mean cut the nub which covers the plug tip? (I guess so.) Sure, cut that off. Some jacks don't have it. SwitchCraft doesn't begin to cover the plug. Of course your stray wires and other plug may touch your plug tip, but you can watch (and maybe it likes having its tip touched).

You could say that SwitchCraft is correct. If you may push dirt into your jack, don't seal, leave it open so the dirt drops out. Then the 99%-99.44% "closed" type should also have dirt-drop holes. (Maybe that is part of why there is a hole on the bottom.)

Really useful if you don't have room or you don't necessarily want to drill extra holes in your amp chassis.
fx-loop, notice the send and return level trim pots that can be accessed directly through the jacks.

SuperFET overdrive for the input jack has the same thing..

geeze, where to start?

kipper - you have good taste in women (tell Mrs Kipper I said.) mark - cheque please. nathan - my main aim in life is to get you laughing out loud in class. no, really.

the trimpot at the end of the tunnel - I have a something I could use that for, another case of "I'll put that (trimpot) fire out when I get to it".

nipples have since been cut - turtle's head sighted, not poking - jack now happy, together with plug [coat time].

and Paul, it was not my intention to

This thread is a beautiful example of how all forums should work - equal parts irreverence and good ideas, with no mention of Hitler or cats.
I too like the light trimmer at the end of the tunnel idea - thanks all.
