Hi,
I am trying to build a battery powered small amp for voice busking. I bought a cheap D-Class amp from ebay, and I soldered a mic preamp. Now I have to choose the speaker. I have understood so far that speaker quality is something that you get what you pay.
I tried it with a 30€  8" hifi spare speaker I had (crossovered with a tweeter) and I thought that the amp was crap, but when I tried it with a 12" Vox guitar speaker it sounded really great!
If I want to buy a speaker for a voice oriented amp,  under 90€, 8-10", what should I look for? any suggestions?
thanks!

if you dont have alot of watts available and/or your running on battery power, youll want...
a high sensitivity rating, or loudness per watt...
you'll want a tough speaker that can handle the environment...
you'll want to match the amps lowest output impedence... if itll power a 4 ohm load, get a 4 ohm speaker ratherthan an 8 ohm that will waste volume...

i like peavey speakers for their loudness/toughness and power handling. good workhorse speakers that arent very pricy as they are less mojo... they sound good and are very reliable.
i'd find a 10" (or 12" if you can fit it) scorpion, a bit heavy, but a tough good sounding no frills workhorse speaker with very good sensitivity. should be able to find one in 4,8,or 16 ohm, depending on what the amp needs (if itll drive a 4 get a 4, if it needs 8 get an 8, dont run a higher ohm(vol loss-not ideal) or lower ohm (blown amp-REALLY not ideal) speaker than the amp needs.

Agreed about the high sensitivity (efficient). A guitar speaker should be pretty good for voice (look at thr F response for some of your fave 12s)  and are usually rather efficient.  They have the added bonus of being a single point source - crossovers make things muddy - especially voice as the crossover in a 2 way is usually right in the upper mid 'vocal intelligibility' range.

What I was gonna suggest when I saw only the title was any vintage alnico (efficient+mild natural limiting at power handling extreme so you can more safely crank it). PA/hifi speaker 8, 10 or even 12" (but you don't need the bass obviously); something with a whizzer cone.  Dunno about over in Britain, but you can get stuff like that here on ebay for $20-40 per single speaker as long as not a popular/revered model.

Thank you for your advice,
so, so far we've got
peavey scorpion
alnico vintage

I checked them in the internet (mostly ebay),
they are indeed very cheap 20-30$m but shipping goes over 30-40$!
it's a pitty to pay that much more for shipping than the actual speaker!
Any other more...european option ?

Granny Gremlin

There should be some cheap British/German ones (though a lot of those are pricey due to name, but you could still get a deal on a single vs a pair which is what the hifi guys mostly want unless replacing a blown one).  Klangfilm, Wharfdale, Celestion, Rola (back before the merger) etc.  There's also good Scandinavian options from the end of the alnico period (Seas).

Ciao fatecasino, dove sei ubicato?

Where are you based in europe? Blue aran sells  this
Or you can try Hot Rox UK. They are both in the UK and sell Celestion. Depending your location the shipping will be still high, though

I am in Greece, I did't know until I found out that shipping costs would be so high!!
Blue aran is a bargain but shipping is too expensive,
Hot Rox is more reasonable 13GBP

I can't find any Super 8 on sale, I find just the Eight 15 8" which I think is different

feddozz

Blue Aran has them, look at the link I posted above.

Blue aran sells  this

The Super 8 is the predecessor of the Eight 15. Costs less because it is out of production £15 rather than £25, shipping excluded. Good shopping
