Hello, DIY Stompboxes!

Sorry for this possibly dumb question.

I am currently working on a Ken Stone design (it's a HP/BP/LP VCF), and got it to (sort of) work! However, my resonance pot is not working entirely as it should. In the schematics (http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/cgs35_syntha_vcf.html), there are bubbles around the three terminals of the pot (it is the 1K RES-pot in the schematics) and I'm not sure how to interpret those bubbles. Could those be a shared node? Wouldn't this by-pass the pot? And is this conventional in general schematics?

What do you all think?

Thank you so much in advance, and sorry again!

I would interpret the 'bubbles' as denoting pads to off-board wiring - for the three pot lugs in this case.

>my resonance pot is not working entirely as it should
What is it doing/not doing?

hello and welcome, kj. also hello Ken Stone.

the little bubbles are one way to indicate flying leads or off-board wiring. sometimes >> or << will be used, or your personal choice of something along those lines. not a dumb question on any level. so each terminal on the pot gets a single wire back to the circuit board, with that electro cap mounted on the pot itself.

there is a current thread on -how to wire to pots- has many ideas there. also, the bible, "the secret life of pots" over at geofex. you must read that before anyone else will reply, I'm afraid. it's the rules.

do that, come back and tell if still not clear or not working.

[edit :] I type slow.

This was great advice for me as well, ""the secret life of pots" over at geofex". I am just starting out and have a Hammond AO-35 amp that I want to covert into a guitar amp.

My question is, is there any other articles/sites that one needs to reed to better communicate at this forum?

Thanks to everyone who freely shares their wisdom here!!!

we will often refer to 'something' at AMZ.
we've all built something from runoffgroove (even with major design flaws).
there's lots of stuff at ESP from rod elliot.
and you're maybe a bit too late for the good stuff at beavis.

others?

Thank you for sharing the places you find most informative how to sites.

Do you create files or folders on topics your are learning about?

What is the best way to organize the information once you have found it, then how to making very easy to access when needed?

Thanks

On my computer, in "My Documents", every effect (or amp) has it's own folder, i.e. Superfuzz, Fuzz Face, Uglyface, etc. I then create sub-folders below each if necessary, i.e. germanium, silicon, pictures, layouts, etc., or whatever you find will make sense to you. Within that, I'll often copy/paste to Notepad tidbits of info from the net, like links, troubleshooting info, voltages, or save screen shots if necessary.

Over the years, having this info organized on my hard drive has not only saved me from hours of troubleshooting headaches, but also from having to search through the net for info I know I have. To date it's over 350GB of drawings, layouts, schematics, pictures, videos, and information.

Most importantly... DO REGULAR BACKUPS!!!!! I have an external HD dedicated just for what I have collected to date. I have it set up to automatically mirror my drive. I had a scare a few years back where my HD crashed, corrupted so as I could not boot up from it, and would not be recognized by another computer when I tried to load it onto a good system as a second drive. I was damned lucky though, I found a piece of software that could see the drive, and extract all my saved info. Needless to say, it scared me straight. :icon_mrgreen:

Thank you, that was a wealth of knowledge you shared. I am finally retired and would like to start this journey with my son building projects, that has been my dream since watching  my friends build Heathkit's when I was a kid!!!

Thanks again.

You better hurry up and build that Zen Drive you were pining over a while back! You're not getting any younger compadre!  :icon_mrgreen:

p.s. Hi, and Welcome to the forum.

It shuts off the sound whenever it's positioned at its extremes: i.e. whenever I got the pot at 0 ohm or 1 kohm, the sound stops, but at any other value it is resonating as I expect it should!

That doesn't sound ideal. Have you wired it with the capacitor between the middle lug and one of the outer two - the schematic doesn't note which way round to wire it, but I would guess it should be connected to lug 1.
In any case, can you measure the voltage on lugs 1 and 3 when the pot is at min, middle and max rotation?
