Hello Peeps

Can anyone recommend a ring mod build please. If money were no object, I'd be trying to get my hands on Randy's Revenge by Fairfield Circuits, or the limited to 200 units DBA Space Ring.

I LOVE the loveliness of the RR, but I'd be equally at home with the filthiness of the SR. I can only go by YouTube videos for them both, but they're my faves so far.

Thanks...

...Randy's Revenge by Fairfield Circuits...

If I had the money I'd get one of those, too. I love it.

I build some Thing Modulators by Tim E when I started pedal building. Easy little circuit and it sounds really cool for a pseudo ring mod.

Lovetone Ring Stinger. You get a nasty ass octave circuit as a bonus. You said "money was no object". :icon_mrgreen:

King Corruptor is right there as well. Great circuit. Easier build than the Lovetone, but great nonetheless.

I love the corrupt or. I put in a blend using the fuzz only stage.

The ring mod I think I need though is the one with two transformers, input amp, and null adjustment. "Real" ring mod, some would say.

Madbean offers a clone of the EHX Frequency Analyzer which like the RR is based on the AD633, i'd say that's probably your closest bet.

SO MANY PEDALS AND SO MUCH REAL LIFE TO GET IN THE WAY OF BUILDING THEM !!

Thanks for the suggestions. How did I forget about Ring Stinger !?!? Most of the Youtube videos of the RS only ever show the REALLY whacked out 'space invader on ketamine' type stuff. Does it venture into subtler territory ?

Mark Hammer

The RR is a nice pedal.  Does a great tremolo too.  Guillaume Fairfield is a local fellow.  We've had many pleasant chats.  Makes a good product that tries to achieve the most with the fewest controls - just have to pick them right.

I'm gonna attempt the string ringer v1.2.

Just checked the BOM and I've got most of the components already. I'm not the greatest at etching my own PCB's but I'm gonna have to learn some time !!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Make sure you've buffed the copper board to a semi-mirror shine before transferring the pattern, and keep yer bloody fingers off it!

Seriously.  "Finger juice" is the bane of complex etches.  It has a way of interfering with etches and leaving blotches on the board.  I try to keep a clean piece of paper between me and the un-etched board.

And, although one can use photo paper successfully for a great many boards, when things get as complex as this project, it's the time to turn to press-n-peel for insurance that the entire pattern gets transferred properly.  You want to avoid ironing it on, and seeing sketchy parts when you lift the paper off.  PnP lets you see, in relief, what has been successfully transferred and what hasn't.  Other toner-transfer media are not quite as good at that aspect.

I've only used photoresist boards in the past, all low scale stuff (fuzz faces, ROG big daddy, EA trem) and I was wondering whether or not to go down that route again as I have the chemicals and a bunch of acetate at hand. I do need a proper UV bulb though. The one I have isn't up to scratch which I've been told is why I had a low success rate.

Mark Hammer

Well it's a pretty big board, which means a pretty costly pre-sensitized board; not the sort of thing one wants to bugger up.  I have negligible experience with photosensitive boards.  What I know is that if a toner-transfer does not come out optimally, one can simply scrub down the board and try a second transfer.  My understanding is that such errors are not easy to rectify with photo-resist methods, unless one does the photo-sensitizing (i.e., spray) oneself.  On the other hand, photoresist yields a crisper and more precise pattern.

Looks like quite a build.  I see diodes in the feedback loop of the "straight" audio path. If I were to build a ring mod with the actual dual transformer/ bridge rectifier method, I would want the option of hearing it blended with the clean sound and not always the fuzz. That's what appears to be going on. Consider putting the clipping diodes on a switch?

After looking into it, I'm gonna go down the P'N'P route. It'll work out much more expensive by the time I buy new (bigger) boards & a new UV bulb etc...

You might want to look at the v1.3 doc too. There are some improvements in there.

I've found this...

I'm gonna build this little fella first. I need to practice etching PCB's before I waste time, money and patience on the Ring Stinger. Looks like a nice little project to tide me over until attempting the RS.

Looks cool. What will you use for the carrier?
I built a Thing Modulator years ago and it was very fun and simple to build ring mod approximation
A couple years ago I picked up an EHX Ring Thing and ring mod is now off my wish list for good
