What is a good compressor pedal to build off of?

What's the difference between the ssm2166 and ssm2167? I was thinking of trying a build with the 2167, but if the 2166 is a better choice, then... I guess I'll have to read the data sheets/pdfs.

Smallbear offers this: http://smallbear-electronics.mybigcommerce.com/ic-ssm2166-sbe-reissue/

and can be used with this Jack Orman Board: http://www.muzique.com/tech/2166.htm

Hope this helps!

Definetly will be looking into the Jack Orman circuit, however I think that pin socket is a bit too expensive for me, so I'll probably just get one of those DIP connectors to solder onto.

Not sure what the difference is, if they are similar enough, then maybe I'll try that one too!

I have another question about this schematic: http://www.muzique.com/ssm2166.gif

Can I replace the C9 cap with a non-polarized cap? I can't seem to find an electrolytic that is only 33pF

Thanks!

Also, the capacitor schematic symbols are all over the place. If it has a plus sign on it, is it electrolytic (polarized) ? Some have two straight lines and a plus sign, others have on straight and a curve and no plus sign.

What I do is above and including1uf is use electrolytic. Unless specified non polar for just 1uf.
Anything smaller I'd use ceramics or box or film, greenysl for stuff smaller than 1uf (C 1 3 5 9)
You'd be very hard pressed to find picofarad values in electrolytic.
Unless advised otherwise.

That's clearly a small Ceramic.

While the straight/curved line cap symbol is supposed to imply polarity, few draftsmen take it very seriously.

If using a polarized cap the symbol can give insight about which way  to orient it.  You can substitute np caps for polarized caps without much worry and then it doesn't matter whether the draftsman was drunk when he drew the schematic.  Go the other way around and you need to think more carefully about what the circuit is doing.
