Help me order parts

Ok, I've built a ham radio cw transceiver, do my own guitar wiring and have built a crystal radio. I've got a few parts lying around and have a breadboard to try stuff with. But, I'd rather not get into a project only to find out I need some parts and have to put it on hold. I'd like a list, if you guys don't mind, of some good parts to order in bulk and always have on hand. Transistors, caps, resistors, pots, jacks, switches, etc. Values, as well, if you don't mind. Obviously, once I get something working right in a breadboard, I'll try to build it on a board, so maybe some enclosure suggestions, too? Thanks.

Hi Jared, welcome!  I also started in ham radio, a bit.  It was fun, but not as fun as making noise!!

Search around the forum, this topic has been covered quite a bit now and then...better lists are out there than I can type up in 10 minutes, plus, it's early and I don't want to work, LOL!

I suggest a FULL KIT of standard 1/4W E12 resistors and also of poly-type capacitors (Ebay, etc)...you can get them very cheap.  The caps will be of many values (50 different values, say) and be values that make sense.

At least 50 to 100 each of transistors 2N3904, 2N3906, 2N5088 and 2N5089, 2N2222   Again, lots of 50-100 from Ebay or a supplier, $5 each

Alligator clips and stranded hookup wire to make jumpers....solid hookup wire to make breadboard jumpers and PCB connections...

A bunch of opamps, TL071 and TL072, RC4558, a couple of 555 timer ICs.

1N914 diodes, plus 1N4001 diodes.  Some LEDs, various colors...pots of various values (5k, 10k, 50k, 100k, 500k, 1Meg...)

This will get you going....get digging, there ARE many lists on the forum!  :)

Some Dip8 sockets and single inline sockets for transistors.
1/4 Jack sockets, 2.1mm DC jacks, Battery snaps, A selection of pots, a handful of jfets and or mosfets.
The list is endless.
As Gibson says there are some "Common parts" threads here already.
The search functions is a great resource at the top of the page.
As is Geofex , AMZ, Smallbear. Steve fron Smallbear has a lot of breadboard articles on his site too.

In addition what what's been said above, get plenty more 1k, 10k, and 100k resistors. A normal kit will only have a few of each, and you'll need more. Many more.
Dave's not here, man

Add in the switches and jacks that are part of every build.  3PDT switches are the norm and jacks with a break-before-make or make-before-break contact that opens a circuit to the tip contact are something to stock up on.  Also 2.1 mm DC jacks set up for isolated barrel (since the tip is usually ground and the barrel negative) and completely isolated from the enclosure are something you need every time you expect to use external power.  You may need battery snaps and batteries and you may want wall-wart power supplies.  If you are getting into delay/echo/chorus/reverb pedals, the PT2399 is the popular choice.  Add in some LED's and LED bezels of whatever type you want to use.

If you want to build some specific stompbox, check the schematic section in this forum and make a list of parts.

This is an old thread of mine way back when.

But it might give you some ideas.

Ha ha, you bet, DBP...I actually have about 5 of those radio shack resistor sets they used to sell, and have still ordered 100 each of 1k, 10k, 100k...

Hello and welcome Jared.
I'll try to keep my answer down to 3000 words, so here's a start  ;)

"I like distortion and I like delay. There... I said it!"

+1, Ben.
I knew I was using the Tayda site the wrong way. Thanks for clearing it up.
