Good morning I may be telling people what's common knowledge but if it saves anyone getting caught out its worth the post.
It appears that tayda orders under 2kg are posted via air mail and delivered by Royal Mail no VAT or duty the last 7 orders I have placed
Order #8 2.3kg goes via different route held up in customs for 2 day vat added then handed to the clowns who are parcel force who hold until vat and their handling fee are paid!
I ring and pay thurs told delivery today fri, ring to check and oh... systems were down yesterday payment wasn't recognised so didn't go out for delivery.
Moral of story keep orders under 2kg unless someone has a different experience

Nice one cheers Dan!  I've never ordered from Tayda purely because I've been concerned about these potential additional costs.  I need some reverse log pots and a bunch of other stuff I cant get from rapid and the like.

Perfect timing too, about to order some bits. AND someone posted a Tayda discount coupon code (HOUSE-OF-CARDS) on another thread the other day.

Happy Days!

Kipper4

Yep I had that once. Stung by the customs.
It's cheaper to pay two lots of postage and have smaller parcels.
Ma throats as dry as an overcooked kipper.

Whats the typical delivery time to the UK? Around a week?

I guess this time of year it's anyone's guess.

Kipper4

Two to three week. Usually a fortnight and a couple of days to me.

Mine average around 10 days, I spoke to someone at tayda they said in future if it's a big order or as in my case lots of enclosures on the check out notes put something like "if order exceeded 2kg please contact me prior to dispatch" and as above you could split the order I'm going to order a couple of enclosures each time I order now rather than all in one go

slashandburn

Nice one thanks. That's not bad. I'll assume most orders are coming from Bangkok? I see they also have a warehouse in Colorado.

WOW really.

I thought Australians get screwed more than most due to conversion rates and just prices we get charged in Australia.

My first order with tayda was 2kg or more as i stocked up and bought everything i needed straight up. I got it here in under 10 days and no import charges or anything!
Ordered a few times now and the longest I have had to wait was 2 weeks.

I build cause I'm to pov to buy one! Plus electrocution is a great learning tool

Lucky you. Here we pay vat no matter what's inside. I get one guitar pick from gravity and pay the tax :) and it takes them over a week to deliver once it gets here

Hey Troy!

Not sure what the rules are now, but in the past the line was drawn at AUD$1000...  above that value,  GST and import duties were charged. Below that we just get ripped on postage...

From some posts on the handful of IT industry mailing lists I'm a member of, the .au government has been making noises about hitting overseas sellers for GST if importing to .au.    I don't know how they propose to do this, but I expect they will have to impose GST on every dollar  leaving the country  (which wouldn't be a bad thing, as this would get the fat cats hiding their hidden tax-free $ in overseas tax havens  :)  )

Yeah we have a limit of 1000aud before inport duties etc. Still you guys can get a real usa Gibson for 500p we pay 2000 for same guitar. I get the dealers need to make money but even with conversion rates etc we get screwed hardcore here. Businesses here complain about online shopping but if i can get the same product at half the price with a little extra for postage and imports i will.

Yes, this is ridiculous, but ithis is the 'free market' sales model. i.e.  to only distribute via 'channels', guaranteeing everybody in the distribution line their 'free market' chance to solidly ream the guy at the end of the chain. Because it is tied in like this, nobody can be truly competitive as the authorised wholesalers are forced by the channel to fix the price based on who the retailer is, and anybody outside of this network cannot legally purchase at wholesale.   The IT hardware market is exactly the same.

The downside of directly importing or buying via 'grey market' sources is that nobody will honour the manufacturer's warranty in the 'licensed market' area, and with the complaints of  poor quality coming out of the big manufacturers, this has it's own (massive) share of risk!    (Camera/lens  buyers beware especially!)

Apologies to the OP, we're drifting off topic :)

PS: May I suggest that next time you're at the guitar shop, you might play a Maton or a Cole Clark alongside the 'big name' instrument you're looking at?   :)

I have ordered from tayda a couple of times without any problems (to Denmark) , but my orders has always been below the limit where I have to pay VAT. However the last time I ordered, the order arrived in Denmark in a week (new record), but the bloody postal service delivered it to a wrong address, that refused the package, and instead of trying to find the right address, they returned it to tayda.

To make a story short, due to technicalities on how tayda specified the value on the package, when they resent, I had to pay VAT. Now I don't mind paying VAT, after all its paying for my kids education,  but I do mind paying the almost 25$ fee the bloody postal service  takes for handling the payment oF VAT (app. 3$) End of story is that  my 12$ order ended costing me almost 40$.

Sorry for the ramt, been drinking to much wine tonight  :)

I'd say you can be excused for a rant against what sounds quite clearly like an extortion racket.

There was me thinking Denmark was quite progressive.

I remember back when Tayada started years ago my orders always came from Thailand ... Sometimes I would wait a month or more on delivery. Was thrilled when the Colorado warehouse was constructed, all my orders now usually take seven or less business days . In all the years that I've ordered from these guys they've only made a mistake on my order once and it was a very tiny mistake.  In this respect I feel very lucky, however I have to order my Seno 4007 photoresist developer from England , else pay three times the cost here in America. Even that is only taking nine business days to arrive!

I have just passed a big order at Tayda (crowdfunding project, lots of potentiometers to get), I got no problems at all! (and delivery was very quick for Thailand to France)

I did not know they had a warehouse in Colorado!
I have just made a list of suppliers for guitar effects parts, and I was not sure of how tayda performed in the US, I will add this info to my post.
http://www.coda-effects.com/2016/11/top-electronics-suppliers-for-guitar.html

But for Chinese orders (from AliExpress for instance), I usually split my orders below the "UPS/Fedex/TNT" limit to avoid customs.

Mgt280y

While on this subject need to place an order with mouser not really used them much tho, are there any tips to avoid customs/duty/vat on deliveries to U.K.
