So.... where is everybody sourcing their 2n5457's from these day's?  I do a lot of biz with tayda, they've been out on stock I think for about 3 months now!   J201 as well. I have quite a large stock of them at this time, however it's always good to know of other good sources.

rutabaga bob

Jameco has them - $.85 each, quantity of 10 to 99 are $.75 each.

EDIT: Didn't realize you said you have plenty. But I'd just say ebay is a great place to source bulk parts. Though it's usually over seas with e-packet snail mail. (last order took over 2 months from purchase to mailbox)

Yeah, Ebay or Smallbear, for me.  2 mos., Kevin??  Holy crap!  Longest I've had to wait for the slow boat to get here was about 2, maybe 3 weeks.    Most stuff I get in bulk from China is <10 days.

Quality control will be better coming from Smallbear.

MXR Dist +, TS9/808, Easyvibe, Big Muff Pi, Blues Breaker, Guv'nor.  MOSFace, MOS Boost,  BJT boosts - LPB-2, buffers, Phuncgnosis, FF, Orange Sunshine & others, Bazz Fuss, Tonemender, Little Gem, Orange Squeezer, Ruby Tuby, filters, octaves, trems...

You could also buy some MMBF5457 surface mount equivalents ($0.44 each or $0.312 each if you order 10-99 of them from Mouser).

Then you'd have to surface mount them...   :icon_eek:

Nonsense!  :icon_wink:

Just do what this guy does (crusty old broken soldering iron is optional, I think):

Another example:

One more (I like this one best):

Alternatively, you could solder them straight to some veroboard (but I guess this counts as surface mounting them):

I've been getting the Central Semi ones from Mouser. They're $.75 each if you get at least 10.

Ha ha!  That smells like desperation, but does have a kind of folk art appeal  ;)   I'd drop the thing on the floor with my bits of stripped wire insulation, never to be seen again...

Got my last batch from UTsource in China . Sent China Post with tracking for four bucks , took about 12 days not bad.  50 for .30ยข each.  Also got a bunch of ic's... And now I can't remember what I ordered them for. I need to start writing things down!   All tested fine so I may just keep ordering from them. Like I said it's always nice to have a backup source if you need it.  But surface mount ? No no no!  Only when I can get my nano bots taught to install them properly.

Kipper4

That's pretty cool actually especially since the same applies to smd j201s
Ma throats as dry as an overcooked kipper.

Smoke me a Kipper. I'll be back for breakfast.

The one soldered to the header pins is a handy pinout since the gate is on the center pin. With J201 and 2N5457 the drain and source are interchangeable so that makes this config hard to get plugged in wrong.. but, it will not be compatable with your standard J201 pinout.
Doesn't matter what you did to get it... If it sounds good, then it is good!

As long as you aren't planning to cover the top with black epoxy, you'll be fine.   :icon_wink: (I get what you are saying though.  It is not always going to be a drop in solution)

Plexi

I read that they are interrupted.
IDK if that's true ... but I was looking for them a lot.

A few weeks ago I was for some resistors to a bad old shitty radio shack store full of cellphone gadgets here in my town.
When the guy open an old box, I saw the inscription "2N5457" in a small bag full of dirt.. so I asked him.
" ??? ...I don't know... seems to be transistors... let me check for the price".
After 10minutes searching in google to know what the hell had there, they asked $1,20 (not a bad price, judging where I'm...).
So I bought them all (11)  ;D

As soon I was at home, I built an echoplex preamp: the best preamp I've ever ear/used.
EP Booster: you're a lie!  :icon_mrgreen:

I had the same results with BF245.
Another recommends the use of PF5102, 2N5458 or J112.
To you, buffered bypass sucks tone.
To me, it sucks my balls.
