Hello guys.
I have repaired few weeks ago this OD820. I have changed his dead chip (TC7660s CPA) on Max1044.
So, now it's working, but, even with battery his noise with whine above 5 khz killing me  :icon_cry:

Here is photo where is a whistle

Guitar volume knob turned all way down

And i have recordered
only maxon od820 with gain and level on max with clean amp -

And maxon with gain and level on max + amp with turned on metal effect

Welcome.

Check that pins 1 and 8 are shorted on the 1044.

I've found max1044 (from tayda) to whine where TC1044SCPA does not (at least not as much). I found it perplexing considering I've read that using the multiplier is supposed to mitigate this on the max1044. I'm having problems with TC1044SCPA as well on my OD820 in certain situations. I don't know enough to figure out whats going on.

I misread the chip. The 7660s oscillates at 45khz boost, the max1044 at 30khz. Maybe that's causing an issue? My problem is something different.

After a few days of testing. (1 and 8 pin was connected on max1044) sound of whine was a little bit low. I'll wait until ICL7660SCPA will come. need to test with this chip.
I can't find TC7660SCPA (OEM) from microchip. If ICL version will not help. i'll buy not original from Amazon

p.s (sound of maxon 820 is a little bit muddy and not thin. maybe this caused by bad voltage)

Well, ICL7660s has arrived.
Changed MAXI1044 to ICL. Better. Less noise, but! (when all knobs on 12 o'clock)
I have the same problem with the whining, even when connected 1st pin to 8  I hear no difference.

Possibility A: It's working fine, but you have a bad power supply and it's switch mode. Whine is due to the voltage chips switching frequency modulated with the power supply frequency.

Possibility B: Not only the TC7660s was damaged, but also one or more of it's supporting components - diodes, electro caps.

Possibility C: Similar to A, but if you have a digital preamp in your test amplifier, the whine can be interaction with the voltage chip frequency and your preamps sampling frequency.

I had the very same problem with my build of ECH83 tube preamp (http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=98256.msg1091676#msg1091676), it seems that LTC1044 is not using boost pin (or some versions of that IC). I will stick to LT1054, it is much better anyway.
