Rat using metal can IC?

I saw that Small Bear has these: IC ua308HC

I thought it would be cool to build a Rat using this instead of the usual DIP IC package.   I build on stripboard and I can find lots of layouts for the DIP  style 308.

So, my question is, will the metal can package work in those layouts with some reasonable leg bending/twisting, or, if not, does anyone know of a layout for the Rat specifically designed for the metal can IC?

Oh yeah dude, definitely. You just have to be willing to bend those funny legs into the right place. The pinout should be the same as a normal DIP.

I used one these myself on an Aion Rat build, so yes, it works great.  Tip: bend the legs to fit in the holes, then trim them to fit.  I.e. don't make the mistake of cutting all the legs the same length - since the can is round the legs will have different lengths.  You probably already knew that, but just in case...

Metal can op amps are where the mojo be at.  :icon_biggrin:

Just watch out though, if memory serves me, the tab indicates pin 8 on the metal cans. Not pin 1, like you would be used to seeing on DIP units.

Tru dat. The 1, 4, 5, and 8 legs will end up being a bit longer, since they have to reach out more. Solder in place first, trim after. Anyway... why would you trim first in the first place?  :o

If you want to you can use an ordinary 8pin dip socket for the can varietys too.
No extra mojo though.  :-X

Yes the tab is pin 8.

Metal can ICs are great! I just built this TS with a metal can Raytheon 4558:

^ I'd like to hear that, I've never seen a metal can 4558.  On the breadboard I built a Son of Screamer with two metal can LM308AHs.  It sounded like crap.  I tweaked it to better, but something about the attack was never good.  Scrapped it.

It sounds pretty good. It's been years since I played a proper TubeScreamer, but this Son of Screamer is as close as anything I remember. I haven't boxed it up yet, as I'm considering a couple mods first (see my post "Hard Clipper Diodes")
