AION pcb's and SPDT switch

Hi,
I'm fairly new to DIY pedals.  I've built 5 pedals so far.  I've recently ordered some pcb's from Aion and am starting on the 1st one.  I have a question regarding the SPDT switches. I bought pcb mount switches but read somewhere on the Aion website that the standard build for his boards was switches with solder lugs. Does anyone know if I'll be ok using the pcb mount switches? The holes on the pcb look pretty wide so I'm concerned if too much solder will seep through.  Thanks for your help!  ~ Wes

pianoman - welcome to the forum.

we love looking at photos, of pretty much anything. can you show us your dilemma, pictorially? it is best to not try and fill oversized holes with solder, because of the excess heat that implies. it would be better to use a resistor leg cut-off to bridge across a too-big hole and make a reliable joint with the switch pin.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. Here's a picture of what I'm trying to reference.  On the left side I've got the switch (pcb mount) placed in the holes to show how much space is still around the pins. I'm wondering if too much solder would seep through the holes so I may need to just get switches with solder lugs

Here's a picture of the pcb from Aion's website to try and give an idea of how large the holes are for the switches:

**Sorry, I can't figure out how to get the pictures to embed in the message rather than linking out.

That switch you have is right.. Those holes are the standard size for that switch you have. Just be aware of how much solder you add and then stop. Yes, you can keep feeding solder into it and it will start flowing through the other side.. so, don't do that!  :icon_biggrin: If you think you have not added enough solder then that is probably the right amount.. On the up side, the holes are big enough that if you ever have to remove the switch all you have to do is get all 3 holes to flow at the same time and the switch will fall right out on your workbench... and when it does fall out be sure to pick it up immediately and hold it tightly in your hand until it cools off.  :icon_biggrin:

BTW: You can't figure out how to get the pictures to embed in the message for a good reason...  :icon_wink: We like linked out images here because, when a year or two has passed and all of the links are dead it makes it so much more intriguing... :icon_rolleyes:
Doesn't matter what you did to get it... If it sounds good, then it is good!

Thanks for the info JOK3RX.  I will go ahead and use the switches I have and save some $$ not having to buy the other kind.
