Recommendations for a really good bass overdrive that I can build?

Try a DAM Ezekiel. Decide on a diode pair and omit the clipping switch if you want. It has a clean blend  which should preserve plenty of clarity.

I recently built two of these http://www.guitarpcb.com/apps/webstore/products/show/1608177 in a box for a guy so he could switch between inputs and have different EQ and gain settings for two different basses.  He mainly plays it on the cleaner side of things but it's drive tones were pretty great when I was testing it.

Don't get it, it works every time I click on it here and on my phone.

It's the GuitarPCB guitar/bass driver.

I'm am not in the SVT sounds bad camp, it's the preamp for a fliptop in jfet form.  Sounds great.
