There used to be a picture of the pcb layout in the generalguitargadgets but when I emailed them, I got the response that they had tried to build it and see if it works yet the result was negative. It simply had not work.  :?

So any ideas about building one? I cannot read schematics btw.

Thanks.

There's a couple of Tbe Driver schematics at the above if there any good to you.

Zonta,

I'm building it this weekend.  I'll let you know if I find anything wrong with the documents on the site.

BD13UK: thank you very much mate but if I only could read the schematics. :(

Jsleep: dude i am waiting eagerly. please do let me know.

Hi, the proyect in GGG is perfect, i build it and i love it, try some mods like the Shaka Tube from Aron and see what you like more.
Both are the same idea but different sound at the end, and both really works.

Good luck and saludos, Marcelo.

JD, there's one minor error in the BK Butler schem at the zugster site. The bottom connection of the 12.6v secondary (coincidentally tube pin 5) needs to be grounded.

Doug,
I have the Tube driver from GGG populated and the tube in a socket on a board and I'm working on the transformer now. I need to ground pin 5??

Doug,

The schematic on my site is a redrawn schematic of that schematic.  I corrected that error on mine.  My layout shows 4 at +12.6v and pin 5 to ground.  correct?

Sounds pretty good I think.  I've never played an actual production tube driver, so I don't know, but this sounds darn good to me.   Looks like I have the Volume and Drive pots wired backwards on the diagram, I'll double check and fix that wiring diagram as soon as I can.

I'll have some RTS boards for this next week...if anyone is interested.

Would there be any interest in a kit that includes the RTS boards, tube, tube socket and right angle bracket for mounting the tube socket in a stompbox and maybe the transformer?

BTW, there was a thread here a while ago discussing the merits of running the tube at exactly 12.6v.  My impression was that some people thought that 12.0v or whatever isn't close enough.

The scoundrels at our illustrious local power company are pumping 124 volts into my house and my transformer primaries are rated at 117v.  So the secondaries are putting out about 15 volts, instead of 12.6 volts (as reated).  I assume the high secondary output is due to the high primary input, true?   Any comments on fixes or whatever to accommodate the higher voltage?

Thanks!

so jsleep, you have built it and it works eh? will the pcb be available for buying? or any chance of getting a custom built pcb if it is not going to available on the store?

Big T

JD,

I saw a recent post from someone stating that we can buy PCB mount tube sockets from Angela Instruments.

http://www.angela.com/  then go to TUBE SOCKETS and then Cinch, N.O.S. Mil Spec., etc. :NINE PIN for 12AX7 tube sockets.

I would think this would be easier to work with than adding a right-angle bracket.

Hey JD!

After you built the TD can you tell me if it's quiet? My ShakaTube has some kind of a hiss problem and I think it's because of the AC powered heaters.

Big T:

I debated the pcb mount tube, but in the end I decided that it would be better off-board.  The more I think about it the more I think I was wrong ;-)  I may revamp it with an on-board tube pcb layout.  Trouble is, probably not everyone can find  a cool right-angle pcb mount tube socket thing like angela has.  I think for most cases it needs to be horizontal to get it in a reasonable size box, etc.

Tomboy:

Mine is pretty noisey right now.  It's not boxed and I paid no real attention to lead dress, so that would be expected I think.  Getting it quiet may prove to be the most difficult thing about this project, I don't know yet.

Zonta:  The boards will be available next week.  Check the online store next monday (one week from tomorrow).

great...an other legendary stomp box which you can build on your own.

btw what are we going to do with the noise issue?

Thomas P.

I think useing DC voltage for the filmament heaters can improve the noise - and maybe the use of shielded cables.
