Glorfindel Box?

OK, so I heard the "Tubular Bells" tune for the first time last night on YouTube. (I know, I must have lived under a rock my whole life).

Anyway, I understand that Oldfield used something called a "Glorfindel Box". Does anyone know exactly what that was? It appears that a schematic for it is non-existent but it is an intriguing object.

Tubular bells was a monster tune while I was at school. That was a bleeding long time ago but I remember there was an awful lot of crap talked about how it was recorded. Crap that me and my mates swallowed wholeheartedly.
While you were under the rock, I was under a different one, ignoring ACDC for 25 years? Why?
Never heard of the glorfindel box - did it have a copper thingy on the top and a burst button switch?

I just read that it was a custom made fuzz effect in a wood box that rarely gave you the same results twice.

Sounds like a germanium fuzz next to a toaster.

I wonder if you could use tube diodes in it, and keep them close to the transistors so when they heat up, that heats up the transistors. They could also be used for clipping the output...

Ha ha, yeah the statement about it rarely having the same results twice makes me think it used Ge transistors since they are notoriously sensitive to temperature.
