Aion Andromeda Caps?

I'm in the process of building the Aion Andromeda Nobles clone and I can't seem to locate any 2.2uf film caps.  Mouser has the WIMA cap that's called for but no stock.   Does any one have any ideas where I might find some or a reasonable substitute.

You won't find 2.2uf in film. The build document specifies electrolytics for these values.

I'm looking at the doc and cannot find a film 2.2uF anywhere. I does say 2u2 electro.

Anyway, 2.2uF films are not uncommon: WIMA 2.2uF, 63V https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/WIMA/MKS2C042201K00KO00?qs=sGAEpiMZZMv1cc3ydrPrF7l45uRd9dVh2V3GO1Z02Vo%3d

Thanks for your replies :)

I'm not sure what build document you are looking at but the Aion Andromeda parts list: C5 and C6  as "2.2uF Film capacitor 7.25 x5mm"   The ones Mouser has in stock are larger  tall square caps 7.25 x 7.25 x 13mm  that won't fit on the board.

The ones that will fit have an estimated ship date 3 months out,  It's looks like I will have to wait :icon_cry:

Unless someone knows a source or have three they would be willing to part with :icon_razz:

We're all looking at the original pre-125B build documentation, which specified electrolytics.  I've no idea why Kevin should have switched to 2u2 film caps?

Have in mind that those capacitors are HUGE. 2u2 in electrolytics is probably 3-4mm in diameter.

I do have some 2u2 film caps, but not the ones that Kevin has specced.  They're quite large - pretty much the same as this 4u7 cap:

So about the size of Northern Ireland.   :icon_biggrin:

Your'e right that build doc says film! Probably an error.
I looked here for some reason (googled andromeda aion instead of visiting the site....)

and saw electro for those same Caps. There are two versions of the docs put there....

I believe it's an update, not an error.  The newer 125B build docs show that the board layout is different: C5 and C6 are clearly film caps with a 5mm lead pitch, not the closer lead pitch of the electrolytics in the original boards.

In the end, if electrolytics were OK for the original version, then they'll work in the 125B version.  The leads will needs splaying somewhat and you'll need to pay attention to the polarity (using the original build docs).

Yes, I switched to film caps for the new 125B update in expectation that the WIMAs would be widely available - but when Mouser is out of stock there aren't really any substitutes in the same form factor. I will plan on updating the docs (and the silkscreen on the next order of boards) with instructions for how to use electros here.

In the mean time, though - here is the polarity for each of them:

C5: left pad +
C6: left pad +
C19: right pad +

You could also sub 1uF's for C6 and C19. Since they are coupling caps and don't set the frequency in any meaningful way, you won't notice any perceptible difference between 1uF and 2.2uF here. C5 does form a filter though so it does need to be 2.2uf.

Thanks for the clarification, Kevin.  Yep, dual-pitch pads would be a handy update to the layout.
