Quick silly question re transistor selection!

do people out there uses these interchangeably?    or is it a little like
1N400X diodes    where its mainly the volatage rating etc which is the difference??

or is the gain hugely different?

ie do i need to keep both?   or just order one and use them?

Check the data sheets for the the gain differences (hfe). The 89 has higher gain I think.

Isn't the 5089 a lower noise version?.  Like BC109 is lower noise compared to BC108.

Yes.

When in doubt, you can go download the data sheets and compare hfe.  And pinouts for other units.
