looking for suggestions for a bigger build (10cm x 10cm board)

It happens I have a spare 10cm x 10cm board (about 3.9in x 3.9in) that's been sitting on my box of parts for a long time. Instead of cutting it down, I was thinking on giving a go on a bigger project, mostly for the challenge. Well, it happens I didn't remember any bigger projects that'll fit this board, the ones I have here use bigger boards than this one...

So, I'm looking for suggestions on what to build on this board. I'll just ask for suggestions that have an available layout (single side), don't use rare parts like BBDs or obsolete parts and really calls for a board this size (no "big muff but in a bigger board" :icon_lol:).

Any suggestions?

patrick398

Sagan Delay? 10 pots, 2 rotary switches, and 3 toggle switches....you said bigger right?
Somebody tried to recreate a space echo using pt2399 chips and it sounded pretty sweet from what i can remember. I've definitely seen a vero layout for it which is titanic, not sure about pcb layout though so maybe not an option for ya

Marcos - Munky

Wow, I didn't heard of this one before. I took a few breaks from building pedals, so I missed it.

My head is on a endless loop of "I want to build it!" and "wow, that's big!". There's no pcb layout available for it, but my board is big enough to fit that vero layout. I just have to redraw it on diylc and convert it to a pcb layout. Or try to do a pcb layout.

Nice suggestion! I'll seriously think about it.

patrick398

Yeah i've considered it a lot too, it's just the off-board wiring and inevitable debug that puts me off. The guy who designed it is on the Madbean forum and i think he has PCBs for sale so maybe he'd sell you the layout

Marcos - Munky

The layout is pretty traceable from the build doc. The problem it's a double layer board, so it's a big "no" for me :icon_lol:

pinkjimiphoton

the clone theory project that was at toppopciccione was about that size, but did use a single bbd.
i lost all them layouts n things in a crash recently, sucks that they're gone. toppo had some cool stuff!!

sadly, they prevented any archiving, so no waybacking shit.

If I recall correctly, the clone theory  project was not that big, but it ideed use a MN3007. The reason I didn't built it is because I had only one 3007 and saved it to build a zombie chorus - which I ended up doing last year. Then topopiccione page is gone, I didn't saved the file and almost all the 3007 on the market are counterfeits, so building a clone theory it's a hard job...

Indeed topopiccione had some nice stuff. It had the only eh bad stone layout ever available, I built that one and still have some of the bad stone files. There was another interesting eh layout, I think it was the polyphase or something like that. That one was bigger, I think. But I also didn't got to save that one. It was that "I'll save it later, I know where I can find it" thing, then when I noticed it turned to "crap, now it's gone" thing.

pinkjimiphoton

i rhink it took up most of a 1590 d, or a bb or something... see if i still have my files

for posterity's sake. i lost the folder with all the files from the build i did, but this was verified and worked great, big-ass vero

i stupidly gave it to analog tom. ooopsies. one more for the collection. lol

An L5 preamp? 12 pots + 4 toggles + 2 footswitches. 14 ICs between opamps and voltage regulators.

Or an all-in-one multieffect, like a sansamp fly rig or something like this:

Jimi, I got to find the same topopiccione pdf file on this page:
https://sites.google.com/site/electroconducive/ehxclonetheory

By the way, the same page have the eh polyphase layout, that just fits my board :icon_twisted:. Now my mind is between the Sagan Delay (which I need the layout) and the Polyphase (which I have the layout but don't have the vactrols and don't know how a home made one will sound). Guess I'll do both :icon_twisted: one at a time, that's sure.

Marcelo, I also didn't knew on the L5! I did a quick search and it's way interesting. But I believe I would need a board at least twice the size of this spare one :icon_lol:

pinkjimiphoton

marcos,
you will LOVE the polyphase!
i restored one a couple years ago, irt does some amazing and cool things...
just be aware that at certain settings, with the knobs all the way up, it may sound like its NOT working, cuz it s above our hearing range or something.
really cool sound! being able to bring the phase in by how hard your pick is pretty cool ;)

4"x4" PCB is big?  :icon_eek:
I'd hate for you to see what's on my work bench

4"x4" could fit most cabinet simulators. But I'm only saying that because I want one  :icon_lol:. deadastronaut just came out with one recently and I'm feeling the itch.

Kevin, if you're talking about the mini moog, well, I'm just speechless. That's the most amazing work in progress I've ever saw! :icon_cool:

Actually, I did a layout for deadastronaut's cab sim and plan to etch it tonight. And my layout went way smaller than 4" x 4" :icon_twisted: just hope it works.

pinkjimiphoton

holy shit, kevin, you're building a minimoog?
how cool is that!!!!!

great circuit, i miss mine ;)

Well the mini is one of many big boards I've worked on. But certainly the largest. The oscillator board was like 5 3/8"x11-3/4".
When you build your cab sim chime into the project thread! Would like to hear more opinions on it. The demo was jaw dropping. But I feel that guy can make anything sing   ;D

For a second I didn't believe you were sincere  :icon_lol:
Yeah man. Huge undertaking nearing the finish line. There's a thread in the OT Lounge sharing the madness.

wow, i will mos def check it out!
i think i still have a couple weird obscure "can" kinda chips for them, or maybe a micro, its been so many years i forget!
but serious props, thats a hell of a project...

i sold off my last analog, a micro moog, about 5 years ago. it worked, but the oscillators were really weak and at the time i didn't think i could afford the parts, let alone have the chops to really do it.

i am sincere! nice!! you get the classic prized sausage on a fork forum award!
