My crusty old fuschia 1973 Motorola catalog for HEP devices lists it as having a TO-72(A) pinout.  Using the diagram below as reference point (looking from below), the pins are as follows:
1- drain
2 - source
3 - gate
4 - case and substrate

Aren't there also some jfet's that featured 2 gates? I remember them being popular in the old Kustom amps for switching.

There's a micro-brewery/eatery my son in Halifax likes to go to called "The Good Robot".  Bizarre name, eh?  Then it finally dawned on me that the place is on Robie St.; Robby = the "good" robot in Forbidden Planet and Lost in Space.  My son tells me that many items on their menu have names with pop culture references.  I doubt that any of their beers are dubbed "HEP 801", though.

Certainly, somewhere in this world, people are driving around with license plates that are - unbeknownst to them - semi-conductor numbers.  E.g., somebody somewhere has a beat-up '94 Toyota Corolla with "JRC4558D"  or "MPSA13" on the plates.

Forbidden Planet and Lost in Space.

Apparently the guy that design Robby the Robot also designed the Lost in Space robot.  When you look at the two you can see that have similar design features.  IIRC there were a few others he designed before those.
