In praise of more parts drawers

Working my way through the pile-of-things-to-finish yesterday, I put the finishing touches on a pair of Madbean "Aristocrat" builds (a clone of the King of Tone).  I had decided to move the dipswitch function normally found on the board to a panel-mount toggle, as well as installing an order-flipper toggle.  The dipswitches select between the various clipping options.  I had planned to have the toggles select between no clipping, diodes in the feedback path, and diodes to ground.  The design allows for more than that (both diode positions), but I figured having access to those 3 on the fly, in addition to order flipping, was more than enough available options.

Wire it up and fire it up, and I can't for the life of me seem to get rid of the clipping.  There is always distortion and no clean available.  What the?

This morning, I ruminated and thought "I wonder if the toggle is making a connection I didn't think it was?".  Pulled out one identical to what I had installed, and sure enough, it was a DPDT On-On-On type, that I had forgotten ordering, mistaking it for an On-Off-On.  Of course, with all my double-pole toggles in the same drawer, I simply went by the presence of a middle position, and treated all toggles with a middle position as the same.

I need another drawer.  I also need to remove those toggles from the builds and rewire other ones.  :icon_rolleyes: :icon_rolleyes: :icon_cry:

My supplier puts every part in labelled bags, which is how I store them. It takes space, time to find the part and looks terrible overall, but it's error free.

Drawer bins would definitely be an improvement, especially when logically structured (caps bin, switches bin and so on).

I store parts in ordinary envelopes in a box. Cheap and practical. Bigger and irregular parts in transparent Bags.

For me drawer bins would be overkill. I don't have enough parts for that, or space enough at my workspace.

I recently went through all (well, most of) the crap I've been accumulating for the past thirty or so years.  Sorted stuff into three main categories; discrete components, hardware, and digital components/ICs.  I ordered a sheet of conductive foam, and several of these:

Man, I would hate for my wife to see this thread. So far I've been able to keep her convinced that my parts bins are considered "a normal amount" :P

Super jealous! I have a couple of these units but could really do with some more. Aside from being useful is it just me that finds them extremely aesthetically pleasing?

My wife, who is currently waiting for total hip replacement, is currently crippled beyond belief, and her slow sideways movement is akin to a slow line dance! Our house is gradually being filled with mobility aids, the size of which dwarfs your parts drawers!!

Floor-mat at the front entrance to my former place of employment. Oh... the irony.

Please give Ann our best.  I know several people who have had hip replacements.  Completely changes their lives.

Aldi in UK recently had some drawer boxes in a special buy. They went pretty quickly at our local store. I managed to sneak one into the shopping trolly. Only one? I only have so much wall space.
