Ordered J201's, received PF5102's ? ?

As the topic says. I ordered J201's. I got a bag of PF5102's instead. Then I got an email from the seller saying he gave me the latter instead, as they are the same, and I could get more for my money, so I have made a saving.

He also seemed to have included a bag of freebies which are Russian D9K diodes, for some reason.

Anyway, I did a quick Google of this, and it says they are a close substitute. True ? ?

I am using these for a High Pass Filter preamp box for Double-Bass players.

Steve.

I'm no expert - but comparing the data sheets, the Vgs(off) numbers are close, but Idss is very different. So I suspect these would only make reasonable substitutes in certain applications (where Idss doesn't matter). There might be other specs that are similar or different, but these are the two that I know (a little) as being concerns for stompbox use.

They are a close substitute - in certain situations. I regularly sub 2n5457 and J201 for a PF5102 and don't notice much of a difference, especially if it's for buffering or switching purposes. However that was pretty lame of the seller to do and it sounds like he's just trying to foist them off to people because they cost him $0.11 a piece instead of $1.49.

They should have asked for your permission first, before substituting. Doesn't matter how close a match they are. Just out of principal I wouldn't be happy, since it can set a precedent for sketchy business practices in the future.

Good to know. Since Vgs(off) is close - makes sense that switching use should be fine. And buffers are straightforward as well. I would expect that things like the Fetzer Valve Simulator and similar JFET usage - when set up for a J201 might not like being given a PF5102, but it should be possible to make changes so that the 5102 would work.
