Thanks to everybody who showed up and a special thanks to Slowpoke, thank you!

alcohol fixxed the problem? I'll drink to that.

interesting. also, I love plumbers flux for really tough soldering jobs, but for a fabbed circuit board with plated and masked copper, and components manufactured this decade, you shouldn't really be fluxxing a board to death like that.

> Zinc Chloride flux....Oh dear.

(I bet Ian knew this...)  In the 1960s mainframe computer shop, *possession* of plumber's flux was instant dismissal and black-list. Even if way at the bottom of your toolbag and never brought out.

Sand/scrape bad tarnish. Then pure selected pine-sap (rosin) should clean electronic parts plenty well, with little ill effect.

In my defense - that flux is sold here in Belgium by a big DIY chain in a nice little package, which says "liquid flux, helps electric soldering":

They don't carry any rosin-based fluxes and I am not aware of any other local brick-and-mortar shops that carry soldering supplies.

The bottle does list the composition on the back, but I read it too late.

I am also indeed aware of the possibility to order stuff online.

I used an abrasive rubber block for fret polishing.

In "small electronics" we normally get our flux IN the solder: flux-core solder. (But beware, they make fat acid flux-core for plumbers too.)

It is interesting that seems to say "for electrics". The much fatter wires used in house wall wiring "might" withstand acid-core. However soldering power wires is mostly obsolete and discouraged. There's also soldering in stained-glass caming, and copper roof/flashing seams, and various arts/crafts like little copper boxes for nik-naks or dope.

In very-small electronics, SMD parts, liquid flux is often used. I would not expect to find this in a home store (shelves, toilets, plumbing and patio-sets), really any store on the street. There's not enough off-line demand for rosin flux or even really SMD parts and supplies; on-line stores fill the needs.
