I ended up building a couple of drawers/shelves to hold plastic components containers. Nothing too exciting but simple and cheap to build.

Brilliant! Reminds me of puzzle storage cabinets.

SMT resistors and caps, leave in their packs, tape to paper, put in clearfile.

Possible to also buy whole assortments already in a folder.

We had one of those at a place I worked at.  They work quite well.  It was arranged differently though.   IIRC we had through-hole and SMD versions.

Our particular one had a really dumb issue in that there were multiple rows and with labels above or below (can't remember which) but people would often read the wrong label!   To make matters worse the parts weren't numbered 103 etc they had a special coding so you couldn't easily read the part value to see your mistake.   

These types of things work OK, provided the parts fit.   I wouldn't go putting surface mount caps next to each other in one of these  .

It's a photo album.  (Remember "photos"??)  Everything else is in a small tower of 10 RAACO A4 assorter boxes.

The 10 RAACO boxes have multiplied to 15 in the meantime...

I've seen them, and I considered buying a couple of the pocketed-folder kits when I was first getting into SMD, but I still think opening and closing bins of loose components just saves me a lot more time. And where 95% of the time I'm not hand-soldering, just tacking components on to solder paste, it saves me loads of time to just be able to reach into a bin and grab as many as I need then move on to the next bin.
