True, I also missed the £.

Ha, me too.  I was clued in by the Welsh Dragon thing.

QuoteCrybabys just don't "seem vintage" to me for some reason.

Dunlops don't seem vintage to me either, but Thomas Organ wahs do.  Most of those were made in the USA (Chicago and California, close enough), only the first few years were Italian.

Ebay for a long time had the category "Vintage, pre-1980" under Musical Instruments, and that's kind of how I feel about it too.

hamandles

First of all, just let me say that you're doing really well. No, I mean it: really well done, folks.

Secondly, I think I have an apology to make for misleading you about the Wah. It's only vintage in that it's a bit old (but not that old) and not a vintage design such as a Vox. "Vintage" as in "this thing is second hand, a bit old and worn but I want you to give me some money for it".  It's actually an optical wah/volume from the mid 90s. Does this help?

pedalbuild: Welcome! A sterling initial effort that earns you a 4 out of 7!

Andy: You join the 5/7 club. Good work. Also, since you mentioned, it, I do have a Nobels pedal! But it's not an original made in Germany effort. This info may help your far east dilemma...
I'm also impressed at your geography angle: just to help you here, the border is not shared.

willienillie: your for sure 5 remains at 5 I'm afraid...

anotherjim: You got me. Fair cop!

Let's see....
From the latest clues, we know none of the pedals are from Albania, Chad, Peru, El Salvador, Iran, or Fiji.

Going with
USA, Japan, China, UK, India, Spain, Portugal.

I'd guess the USA entry is a Morely vol/wah then.

USA, Japan, China, UK, Taiwan, S.Korea, .... Vietnam!

hamandles

EBK: still just 4/7 sadly. But 10/10 for effort, and what's really important, eh?

.....but......we have a new leader!!

anotherjim has 6/7! Excellent deduction: your efforts have been rewarded. (PS Good shout, but the vol/wah ain't a Morley...)

Last push to get the full seven?

Czech Republic is my final guess.  If I am wrong, I will simply watch the rest play out.  :icon_wink:

czech republic was my first pick, but didn't return many search hits, and is harder to spell.

[edit :] cheque, please!

Hmm...

Your hint about the Nobels suggests Korea instead of Malaysia. It seems we can also lock in Taiwan. The "close to Luxembourg but no shared border" hint has me puzzled. I would have bet good money on Exar made in Poland, but you say that's not it but "much warmer". I have nothing better to offer than to join Eric and Stephen and say Czech Republic, although I have no idea what brand produced or produces there.

Therefore:
USA
UK
Japan
Korea
China
Taiwan
Czech Republic

Cheers,
Andy

Huh, never heard of those. KHDK seems interesting. As for Velorex: I would have guessed that that is a bicycle manufacturer, not the maker of the most adorable microcar ever:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velorex
I don't know what sound it makes but it should fit on a pedal board alright.

They just popped up in a quick search.

We have a winner!!!!

Kudos to EBK, duck-arse, and congratulations to Fancy Lime Andy aka Sherlock, who submitted the whole correct list and therefore qualifies for the non-existent prize (despite rumours of sausages). I have to say I enjoyed that, thank you for joining in!

The full list is (with some provenance notes):

Nobels Distortion Special ("German Electronic Design, Made in Korea") This was my first ever pedal. I think my brother-in-law gave it to me along with a Peavey amp that served me well for years. I have the original box with with a price tag of £60. Quite handy with the noise gate, sounds OK...

DOD Overdrive Plus FX50-B, US made. Given to me by a friend who was focussing on bass and getting rid of guitar gear. Not a bad pedal, either.

This was the tricky one: George Dennis Wah-volume, made in the Czech Republic. 1996. Still available it seems: http://www.georgedennis.eu/pages/fxpedals.htm
In regular use, I like it! Given to me by the same person who gave me the DOD. One of the jack sockets has broken (still works though), and it's a mystery how you get the board out as the sockets are soldered on to the board on the other side (shame!) and of course poke through the holes, so how do you remove it to repair?!!! Might post a picture on a new thread to ask...

Boss Made in Taiwan Chorus Ensemble CE-5. I honestly have no idea where this came from. It just appeared in my cable bag. I asked all my guitarist friends and they all denied ownership. I like it, but never gigged it - I was put off chorus by the 80s.

Matsumin Valvecaster overdrive: Made at home with the support of the fine folk on this forum. I used an old broken Wah enclosure. It's a bit noisy (I guess that's part of the point!), but I love it...

Boss Made in Japan Heavy Metal HM-2: I bet you didn't expect that one! Yes, this much derided distortion is the only one of the original collection of 7 that I actually bought! I noticed it hiding in a bundle of guitar accessories on Ebay - this is the one that cost £12 with a tuner, a stand, a metronome and some books. I don't think it's as bad as some say, and it is quite fun when you dial everything to max. Haven't ever gigged it. I sort of fancy using it when I play with my church band: a kind of "why should the devil have all the good music?" thing! Or I might sell it on to a Swedish Death Metalhead...

Lastly, and slightly boringly, a Vintage Phaser made in Behringer's Chinese factory/city. My son bought this to use with his synths. For a £20 pedal you can't complain.

(I also have an old Japanese Solec Graphic EQ pedal, bought recently on eBay and brought back to life with the help of this forum, which was the first pedal that duplicated a country of manufacture. Really useful with my one knob amp that lacks any tone control.)

So now you know. Thank you for taking part in this, I appreciate it!

Fancy Lime

Hurray for me! That was a fun game indeed. I'm having sausage s tonight for dinner anyway. Let's do that again some time.

A "much derided" HM-2 made in Japan? Are you kidding? I could refer you to any number pf people who would happily sell both their grandmothers for one of those. If I was the pedal-collecting type of person, I'd fight a Balrog for it (in want of any more grandmothers to sell).

Cheers,
Andy

hamandles

Yes, it would be fun to do that again. I'll run round 2 after another 20 years of "acquiring".

Fancy Lime

I should hope someone else can start round 2 before that, no? May I suggest to state upfront what effect types they are and what range of music the poster plays and then have people try to also guess the model and make of the pedals? Like so: "I play Melodic Post-Grunge and have three choruses, two delays, one reverb, and eight stereo ring modulators. What are they and where were they made?" That way the country of origin can be used as a hint for the model or vice versa. I like educational games...
