I don't recommend hot air or hot plates for doing quantity SMD soldering. I use a hot air station to remove components, but you really can't beat the ease of a reflow oven for soldering.

You definitely can't beat the convenience of a reflow oven, but they're MUCH more expensive than a hot plate. A hot plate is still easier than hand soldering, and it can do a great job, you just need to be a bit more careful.
