Continuing Issues with Fuzz Face Clone

I have been fighting this thing for quite awhile now. I can't figure out what's wrong with it. Schematics and pictures will be posted below for context. Basically, it's not fuzzing. If I adjust the 10k trimmer that feeds the q2 collector the signal just varies in attenuation. It sounds the same whether it's engaged or not. I'm at my wit's end with this thing. It's my first 100% diy build.

Pictures (in the pictures I have 2n222 trannies installed. I've since swapped to bc108s hoping that would solve the issue.)

Are you certain that the 100K resistor is actually 100K?
Should be coded brown, black, black, ORANGE, brown. The orange band sure looks like it's silver.
I think that would make it a 10R (10 Ohm ) resistor.

It was from a 100k pack, but it could have been mislabeled. I'll double check when I get home. Thanks!

It's a 100k. The Orange is just kind of scraped.

Oh well, these things happen.
Some voltage readings from the transistor legs may be helpful.
Also confirm that your pots are the correct value.

Is the red wire used to connect the trimpot shorting both pins 1 and 3?
I can't make it out in your photos.

SightsSetStudios

Slowpoke - I'll check voltages tonight.

Keeb - yes, it is.

Slowpoke101

Disconnect the wire from one leg of the trimpot - pin 1 or 3, it doesn't matter. You should only have pin 2 (wiper ) and pin 1 or 3 connected but not both 1 and 3.

I disconnected the wire from one of the legs. It still doesn't sound right. The tone doesn't really change between on and off.

in my experience with fuzz faces, there is a ground missing somewhere, probably between the signal and the circuit
friendly reminder: all holes are positive and have negative weight, despite not being there.

cheers

Best thing to do, replace pot with 8.2k resistor, then post all your transistor voltages referenced to ground.

With the 8.2k back in place.

Q1: E - 0v
       B - 3.95v
       C - 3.94v

Q2: E - 500mV
       B - 4.5v
       C -5.13v

Q1C and Q2B should be identical. What's going on there?

SightsSetStudios

No idea. This pedal is driving me crazy.

I agree with Electric Warrior. Q1 collector and base appear to be shorted.
Also, are you certain that you have Q1 and Q2 installed with the correct orientation?

It would be helpful if you could upload some newer images of both sides of the circuit board.

Just for your information here are the voltages from a working unit;
Q1 Collector = 1.3V
     Base      = 0.61V
     Emitter   = 0V

Q2 Collector = 5.7V (this varies when changing the 8k2 resistor value )
     Base      = 1.3V
     Emitter   = 0.69V

I'm not getting continuity between ground and q1's base or collector with my multimeter.

Will this help (see link), note npn vs pnp alterations, plus I had similar issue on a store bought muff fuzz, turned out to be a mfg error, a 2k7 resistor was installed as a 27k.

Do you know what you're doing?
