Replacing the M51134P (as in the DOD Meatbox)

Hi all,

I have been looking at sub octavers again and particularly the DOD Meatbox and the (not extremely informative) datasheet of the M51134P. I used to think that one had a PPL inside but on closer inspection it seems like it is much simpler. Now unless I am completely off my rocker, it should be fairly easy to build a reasonably close work-alike out of discreet components and a bunch of opamps of CMOS inverters.

Has anyone tried this? Not the most pressing issue in the world, I know, but a modernized better Meatbox-like octavesynth sounds like something I might want. Or is there any modern chip or combination of chips that can replace the M51134P so that I shouldn't bother.

Cheers,
Andy

This won't help you at this exact moment but Smallbear stocks the M51134P for ~$6 if its just getting the part that concerns you.

No, actually ist's more curiosity how it works. Deconstructing this kind of black-box chip with this kind of vague datasheet into funktional blocks or even discreet components can be quite enlightening.

Are you familiar with Valvewizard's U-Boat? It's basically what you're describing. I've found the tracking to be a bit better on the M51134P than in other analog sub-octaves, though my experience is limited as I've only ever built one.

While I like Merlin's U-boat a lot, the working principle is in some crucial parts very different from the Meatbox.
