The only obvious way to make diodes work is to take them back to a separate bias point, pretty much what Peavey does with their transtubes.    One method I tried nearly 20 years ago, was to add a gate-drain diode with the idea it would look like gate conduction when the MOSFET saturates.   It didn't work out that well, partly because the gain stage effectively sharpens the diode characteristic.  Multiple diodes helps a bit but it's still not as good as the Peavey method.    The Peavey method works with BJTs.
